Yea, weird title but I didn't know how else to put it. Anyway, I guess with the holiday season rapidly approaching this is a good time to have this thread. I have gotten a couple of gifts like this.
When I was younger, I would always tell my cousin what he should tell his mom to buy me for birthdays/Christmas. I asked for Kingdom Hearts, and totally expected that to be the game in my DVD case shaped gift. Instead, I opened it and disappointingly saw Shadow Hearts instead. Some crappy looking game I had never heard of. I didn't play it for nearly a year, but when I finally did I was hooked. Ended up being a great game, and I enjoyed it more than when I eventually played Kingdom Hearts.
Another was when my folks bought me American Psycho on DVD. Again, I expected it to be a PS2 game and was disappointed when it was just a movie. I was even more disappointed when I saw that it was what looked to be some crappy horror movie that I had never heard of. Didn't even bother to open it for years on end. I finally watched it out of boredom one day and it ended up being one of my favorite movies of all time.
Anyone else have stories like this?

I got one of those state wooden puzzle maps for kids. I was like 17 at the time. So I was like WTF, then I found 60 bucks hidden in it. Anyway I ended up using the shit out of it. It helped me memorize more about the states and their locations than school ever did.

First of all, yes Shadows Hearts is awesome. It is nowhere near the level of awesome of Kingdom Hearts though.
For me, it was Sock'em Boppers. You know, the blow up boxing gloves/cushions things. Well, I'd wanted actual boxing gloves and was pretty disappointed. Eventually, some friends and I used them on a trampoline and had a blast.

Socks.
Granny always got me socks, it was a granny gift, but the one year she didn't I was disappointed. Now I had to get my own. Bummer.
