There are times where Jerry's acting out of self-defense or defending some other little creature.
But yeah, there's also plenty of times where he's just being a massive douchebag.

Agree on both points. It's in Tom's feline nature to chase Jerry, meanwhile there would be times where Tom is relaxing, minding his own business, when Jerry would start some shit.
But I'll admit, I enjoy the very rare occasions where they would align and become buddies at the end.

Jerry takes this as an invitation to mooch of Tom until Tom snaps, giving up his money because he couldn't give Jerry his just desserts. Jerry is almost as bad as Cena. Oh lord I hated that episode so much, I was such a big Tom sympathizer, I honestly use to believe maybe he'll win this one! |

Yeah Jerry was a jerk most of the time. There a few occassions when he was a good guy as previously mentioned. He did at least try to help Tom take care of that baby when that bimbo badysitter Jeanie was not doing her job.
Jerry I put him in the same class as Chip n Dale, in there is suppose to be protagonists, but really they are antagonists. At least Jerry had his rare moments of being the innocent victom, I can't think of one cartoon when Chip n Dale were nothing but a - holes for no reason.
Sometimes they are defending their turf, but other times they just are mean for no reason Talk about cock blockers, I remember one cartoon when Donald is happy and not bothering anyone or complaning which is rare, on his way to his date with Daisy on his bicycle, Chip n Dale see it, and they just decide let's just ruin his day because we're jerks.

Southbound Duckling - At the end, Jerry and the duckling are trapped under a bucket by Tom, who then pulls a sunshade umbrella in front of the camera as The End appears. |

Many times in the Donald vs Chip n Dale cartoons, it was jerk vs jerks. But here no question they are the antagonists, I don't what kind of person would root for them in this cartoon. Ugh, I used to HATE IT so much when Jerry went into dick mode, hahaha. I actually quit watching Tom & Jerry for a while because it pissed me off so much; I know it's just a cartoon and etc., but what can you do? More often than not, he got little to no comeuppance, even at his douchiest.

I am with you guys, Jerry needs to get his comeuppenance more often than not. I think now the writers realise Jerry is a jerk and it is intentionally. You saw the Shirlock Homes movie, at the end Jerry just attacks Tom for no reason. I loved what Homer Simpson said when he saw the Itchy and Scratchy movie "Itchy's a jerk.
Another cat I root for against the jerky mouse, is Meowth. I am hoping one of these days he catches that dam Pikachu, eats him, and takes his rightful place as the Pokemon mascot.
