Aka, "In Which Void Talks Out of His Butt About A Whether Or Not a Fictional Tank Would Work"
Ahh the HISS Tank. A ubiquitous design. It just evokes images of old sci-fi and nostalgia.
It's often referenced as one of the more ridiculous designs in GI Joe vehicles whenever it's brought up, pitted alongside the Bugg, Trubble Bubble, etc.
Thing is, I don't think the design is that unusual, when I really get a look at it. Okay yes, assumedly bulletproof canopy aside (and if it's not, that's a bit of an issue!), the thing is well armored and looks chunky enough to withstand any major artillery you could throw at it, and the elevated design of the front end actually makes a helluva lot of sense to me. It would make the pilot's area that much harder to hit from the ground, the raised front end and tread orientation seems to suggest that it could easily climb up and over a tank trap, as well, those treads are massive and seem to cover a lot of surface, seems they're made for going up a slope. If it didn't smash right through it, I think it wouldn't have much of a problem breaking through a tank trap.
The laser/pulse ordinance on the top is good for ground to ground from a distance (would suffer up close and personal due to the range of motion of the turret), seems it could handle surface to air as well. The trailer hitch on the back gives plenty of room for expansion for one of Cobra's rocket batteries or one of the whirlwind machineguns, only increasing the tank's usefulness.
Sure, some of the 2000's redesigns of it, particularly the one that had the elevating front end, were a little odd (I don't mean the elevated design of the original, I mean like, the front end of it literally raised up like pneumatically). The HISS V is a weird broad for sure, but in many ways it one ups the flaws of it's predecessors. The only issue I find with it is that when it elevates upwards into battle platform mode, if you had someone daring enough, it just screams to be sabotaged either by explosive charge or just outright dismantling the elevator mechanism. It'd be a ballsy thing to try for sure, but that's one of the only major fatal flaws I ever found with that armored behemoth. (I'm referencing the recent Pursuit of Cobra version, look that sucker up, it's INTENSE)
Anyway yeah, this was just me thinking aloud. I know the HISS has been referenced on a few sites discussing the more fun and silly aspects of GI Joe, but I thought it was one of the few Cobra designs that could very well have some real world applications, with a bit of modification here and there. I'd almost swear some firm out there has made a mini but real world functioning version of the HISS.
I'm no expert by any means, but I don't think this whole thing was THAT crazy.
