Now Vin Diesel in the Pacifier on the other hand destroyed his career until Fast and Furious, aka the 4th. And Rock hasn't been the same since Tooth Fairy. Honestly, Tooth Fairy didn't hurt Rock all that much. Fast Five negated any harm it could've done and he's gonna be in the next GI Joe movie. I think he'll be okay.

Yeah most of these aren't really career defining mistakes. Has Will Smith or Sean Connery really been that hurt by not making the matrix ? I think some good examples would be:
Paul Ruebens deciding "hey I'm pretty sure Im alone in this theather" Sean Young's horse riding accident costing her Batman and then her catwoman stunt for batman returns having her branded as crazy. Mel Gibson getting drunk and talking in public. Stuart Townsend being too young looking for Peter Jackson to take him seriously as Aragon in LOTR, though not really his fault.

Dougray Scott was cast as Wolverine in 'X-Men'. But had to leave the project due to a scheduling conflict with 'Mission Impossible 2'.
Not saying Scott has had a bad career since 2000. But look at what Hugh Jackman (who was relatively unknown before X-Men) has done since.

Wesley Snipes "forgetting" to pay his taxes Word. It sucks that he got the maximum sentence on three misdemeanor counts.

Will Smith turning down the role of Neo in the Matrix has to be a big one. Considering both the sequels and Smith's success afterwards, not really. Pretty much.

Has anyone mentioned Linnocent Lohan yet? Because that girl messed her entire career up. She was such a hot commodity in Hollywood, it was sad to watch her fall, and now I just shrug because she doesn't even bother to get her career and life back on track.

Chevy Chase turning down the role of Forrest Gump. Dude was incredible and jinxing his career. Though in the case of Gump I'm glad he did it. He would've majorly sucked, don't see why they would cast him. According to notstarring.com he also took a pass on opportunities to be in: The Terminator- can't imagine him as a killer cyborg American Gigolo-Chase as an uberstud? Really? The Fabulous Baker Boys-that I can see Splash- I'd say Hanks owes Chase a beer, really stupid move by Chase. American Beauty-Spacey is better anyway, but geez, this could've given Chase's career a rebirth

Not an actor but director Michael Cimino's career was killed after the disaster of "Heaven's Gate" (I highly recommend the documentary detailing why the film failed so badly).

This thread is honestly a bit depressing. A lot of chance involved in these careers failing. But Chloe should've known better. I mean, blowing a dude FOR REAL in a movie? A movie that isn't pornography? That shit's just weird...

Recently, Taylor Lautner relying on the Twilight crowd for further success. They love Jacob, dude, not you. This is a bit unfair. How is he relying on that fan base? Because he still acts? His new movie actually looks ok, plus he's a kid, he has a long time to make a great career.

A movie that contained a scene where Chloë performed (not simulated, but actually did for real) oral sex on Vincent Gallo (the star and director of the film) who was dating Chloë at the time.

Cuba Gooding Jr elected to star in Boat Trip. Safe to say that his career imploded after that. Seriously, looking at his Wikipedia page is staggering. Since Boat Trip, he's been nominated for a Razzie 3 times and has starred in ELEVEN Direct-to-DVD movies. Apparently, Cuba likes being a "Big Fish in a Small Pond" with the Direct-to-DVD market. His biggest competition is Steven Seagal, Val Kilmer, and Jean-Claude Van Damme. That's not as bad as others he could deal with big-screen wise. I don't mind so much since I review Direct-to-DVD movies for fun. I've seen a lot of Cuba's recent work. What did you think of The Hit List?

Joaquin Phoenix making I'm Still Here ranks up there with me. A great actor turned into an incompetent fool all to prove a point which was pretty much pointless. He gained nothing from it and lost a ton of credibility. Before that he was one of my favorite actors. I don't know what he was thinking. His next movie though is The Master, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and also starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams. It seems to be a movie about Scientology the same way Citizen Kane was a movie about William Randolph Hearst, with Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the pseudo-L Ron Hubbard.

I think Phoenix and brother-in-law Casey Affleck were joking around and someone said it's a good idea. That brings up Casey Affleck, he comes off an Oscar Nomination with The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and critical acclaim for Gone Baby Gone and he spends 3 years on "I'm Still Here". He still has Ben Affleck to direct him a good movie but such a waste of time.

Kevin Costner really made two mistakes with Waterworld then The Postman. I think he will make a comeback with good roles again because he's got a legacy behind him (Untouchables, Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves, JFK)
Joaquin Phoenix hasn't made a career defining mistake either in my opinion because he's too good an actor to be ignored. I'm Still There didn't quite work but the guy is still enigmatic.
Chevy Chase's career defining mistake was probably being a dick early in his career to everyone he met so by the time the good roles dried up there was nobody offering him a job.
