Joel Schumacher discusses the Batman movie he never got to makeHighlights: ~ The movie's main villain would've been Scarecrow. ~ Scarecrow was going to be played by...Nicholas Cage. At least, they were in negotiations for that. ~ The Joker was set to return as a Hallucination caused by Scarecrow's Fear Toxin. ~ The Joker was going to be played by...a returning Jack Nicholson. ~ Harley Quinn was going to be in the movie. ~ Harley Quinn was going to be played by...someone. No name listed. And now a couple Schumacher quotes: He feels the path Batman & Robin took was “the wrong choice,” but added... Thought it was interesting and felt like sharing.

I would've watched it for the sole reason of Nicolas Cage.

Studio meddling so they can sell more merchandise at the expense of the product?
Sounds about right.

Wasn't it Steve Buschemi that was considered for the role of Scarecrow?
Though, how was 1999-era Nick Cage like?

At least he copped to the fact that he basically did it for the money (who could blame him) and didn't try to defend it on an artistic level.

Well, truth be told he contradicted himself. When he made Batman Forever he flat out said he wanted to make Batman sexier, put nipples on the suit, brighten up Gotham, and have Batman be over the death of his parents.
Don't get me wrong, I love some Joel Schumacher films. One of my favorites is Phone Booth, but he's on record for wanting to make Batman into a sexy character.

If he got over the death of his parents wouldn't be basically quit being Batman then?

I like Schumacher's version of Gotham City. It looked immense and colourful. Gotham in the Nolan movies just looks like a boring regular city.

As much as Schumacher gets crapped on, and in fairness I've done my fair share of crapping on Joel Schumacher ( figuratively perverts, figuratively) I feel like he's gotten a bit of a bum rap as being the SOLE reason those movies were ultra campy and silly.
Clearly he played a big part of it, but wasn't the only factor. I almost woulda liked to have seen this just to see how over the top it would be. It's weird, after seeing these flicks in my younger days, I wanted one with the Scarecrow ( only I wanted Jeff Goldblum to play him.. just seemed to fit in my head).
I am glad Joel didn't direct Dark Knight Returns. That just seems like it would be quite bad.

Yeah, no offense to the guy but...TDKR already has homosexual undertones in it. I can't imagine how much those would become overtones with Joel at the helm and devalue them.

I am glad Joel didn't direct Dark Knight Returns. That just seems like it would be quite bad. Wonder if it would still have green arrow and superman in it. Also, Scott Steiner IMO would have been perfect as the mutant leader (especially since scott would have been in the peak of his big poppa pump look and character at this time).

They had a big article in Wizard Magazine about Batman and Robin right before it came out and they had a section with Schumacher talking about plans for Batman Triumphant. Most of the stuff above was mentioned, Scarecrow, Harley, Joker in hallucinations. But the casting talked about was Howard Stern as Scarecrow and Jenny McCarthy as Harley Quinn.

I've read that they were also going to try to cast Howard Stern as Scarecrow, which would be a bad idea since the guy is no actor, and don't mention Private Parts because he played himself in that movie. Also, I read that they were going to cast Madonna as Harley Quinn and rather than be Joker's girlfriend/FWB/booty call, they were going to make her his daughter.
I remember reading that Schumacher was going to try to make it a little darker, which I find a little hard to believe since Batman Forever and B&R were anything BUT dark.
As for Joel as a director, I liked The Lost Boys. I have read that The Client was good and I did sort of enjoy 8MM.
