If you look strictly at the numbers, the Braves' and Sox's collapses are in position to be worse than the 2007 Mets' collapse. This will only be cemented if they don't make the playoffs. But they had bigger leads than the Mets and MUCH worse September records.

Red Sox discussing Bruce Chen trade to start a potential 163rd game. It might be the craziest thing to ever happen for a team to trade for a new starting pitching to start only a play-in game If I was the Royals I'd ask for the 1,000X more than he is worth, if the Sox are that desperate, like 5 or 6 minor leaguers and cash.

The other options are John Lackey on short rest, Tim Wakefield starting against a speed team with a catcher who has never caught him, or Weiland.
Can they get Pedro Martinez up from under the mango tree?

oh, and Jose Reyes, or whoever made the decision - gash move. Total gash move. Even by Met standards. It's really not that big a deal. If this game had any meaning & he got taken out early, maybe I'd get the budding outrage. But for the batting title? The outrage isn't necessary IMO.

Lot of people giving Reyes crap about his one and done today. Even Mets fans.

Its unnecessary, just like the White Sox manager keeping Dunn out of the game today. Why? To protect his ego? These guys are millionaires, let them succeed or fail on their own merits, don't treat them like babies. I remember like 10 years ago, the Brewers had a shortstop whose name I can't even remember. He was on pace to break the record for most strikeouts, and the manager ended up sitting him the last two games. It was ridiculed, and rightly so. I wouldn't say its "outrage", its more "annoyance". Just a pet peeve, I guess.

And another Mets season, comes to a merciful end. SMH, How the f*** do we get competitive again? Phillies and Braves will still be strong, then you have the Nats who are most likely going to be competing as soon as 2012...Mets and Marlins are going to be bottom dwellers for the next few years unless they start to spend some money.

I'm sure the White Sox sat Dunn because he can't play baseball period I really don't see the Mets as bottom dwellers. Hell, I think they have a better future then the Nats (who are going to be a 2 player team.) Mets have much more depth even though they don't really have a superstar (although Nimmo COULD be that guy.)

Plus, this being a day game after night game, Reyes likely wouldn't have played today if it wasn't for the batting race. As for how the Mets get better, spending more money will not be the answer, most likely. What's hurt the Mets since the friggin' 80's has been that they've all but given up on developing a solid farm system, relying too often on dropping big money on established names. However, today they have as good a slate of young arms on their farm as they've had in ages, and with Alderson and DePodesta in charge of things, I see no reason why the farm won't continue to improve. That all being said, if the Mets want to be competitive again: they have to finally be healthy. They haven't had anything resembling luck with injuries since 2008.

And yeah, don't blame the Mets or Terry Collins for that (I imagine if anything Terry was pretty pissed about that). It was all Reyes. He took himself out of the game to get the batting title lead, and since they want to re-sign him, last thing you want to do is strain your relationship with him.
I think he cheated himself more than anything, since he could've had a 3-for-3 game or something. Well and the Mets fans who paid to see him in what could be his last game in Flushing in a home uniform. It's not like they had a postseason to prepare for or anything either. If that was the case, it would definitely be more justified.

ah, yes, that's the guy! My god, was he ever horrible. If I remember, he was pulled out of the lineup with about a week and a half to play. He finished with 185 strikeouts. And he didn't necessarily have the power numbers to compensate.

Mark Teixeira crushes the Rays' hopes and dreams with a grand slam. 5-0 Yanks. It's weird hearing the Yanks announcers be so blase about it. lol
Provided there's no huge offensive comeback by Tampa, the Red Sox were just given a big cookie tonight.
