He did it by virtue of being the best actor out there right now. This too - when people ask me who he is - I always say he is this generation's greatest living American actor. Though his new movie about being a fixie-riding bike messenger looks not so great.

Nothing against him, but A list has been downgraded. Someone called Andy Samberg and Jonah Hill A-listers, and I thought "s***" When I think of A-listers of the past, I think Lucille Ball and Cary Grant. Yeah, the "A List" is actually a real thing, and refers to actors by bankable value. The top ten most bankable in 2009 according to Wikipedia were 1. Will Smith 2. Johnny Depp 3. Brad Pitt 4. Tom Hanks 5. George Clooney 6. Will Ferrell 7. Reese Witherspoon 8. Nicolas Cage 9. Leonardo DiCaprio 10. Russell Crowe JGL is getting there I think, but I wouldn't put him on that same kind of level yet. I have no doubt he could carry a summer tentpole kind of movie on his own.
