I'm not one of those people that has only experienced 3D Zelda games either. I played the original LoZ but have only beaten it with a little bit of save stating (though only to save time if I died, not to cheaply beat bosses or anything). I've played Adventure of Link at a friend's and got pretty far but never got a chance to beat it. I've beaten Link's Awakening. I've gotten pretty far in Oracle of Seasons and The Minish Cap but never beat them for various reasons. And of course I beat Ocarina of Time a million times.
But God dammit, Link to the Past gets insanely difficult towards the end. I finally beat the Skull Dungeon which really wasn't as bad as some people say. The Ice Palace wasn't too bad either other than the slippery floor areas. Turtle Rock had some moments that had me swearing loudly but I finally finished it. I'm now on Ganon's Tower and good lord, this shit is driving me nuts.
I have 17 full hearts and need one more heart piece to get 18. I have every inventory item other than the magic cape which I somehow missed. I went into the tower with 1 green potion, 2 red potions, and 1 cure all potion. I've now used all of my potions and still have a few doors to unlock. I decided to turn the game off today out of frustration.
Anyone else think this game is a hell of a lot harder than other Zelda games? The first 2 are probably harder but that's to be expected. After playing all the other 2D games I really expected this one to have a similar difficulty level, but these last few dungeons have been hellacious. I have no idea how I would have figured out half of these puzzles without youtube. Am I just a shitty gamer, impatient, or both?

I completed the game, in full, when I was eleven years old. However, I think the twenty-eight year old version of me would struggle, having played a few retro games recently and found them much harder than I remember. Just stick with it, I'm sure a bit of patience will see you right!

I plan on sticking with it, hell I'm on the final dungeon this would be a terrible time to quit. I just don't think I could have done this as a kid. I think I'm better at games than I used to be.
I remember Donkey Kong Country being hard as f*** as a kid. I never beat it though I got pretty close. Then I decided to play it again a couple of months back and I beat it by casually playing over the course of 3 days. Same with Super Metroid. At this point I just want to finish the game to say I did it, because it really stopped being fun around the time I found the dark world...

Towards the end, this game gets so damn hard. It;s frustrating.

My favorite Zelda game. I also ran out of keys and was stuck. I will not spoil this for you but why don't you and link walk outside for a breath of fresh air?

LttP was fun but frustrating, sometimes (to me) it felt unfairly so. Then again that's 14-year-old me playing on the GBA version, in a time when every game that got frustrating to me was instantly unfairly frustrating.
I still prefer Minish Cap over LttP. That was just plain fun, if a little short. And the final boss was a little ridiculous.

From Turtle Rock on, the game is a test from God. It jumps from around 6 to 10 in terms of difficulty. That torch puzzle in Turtle Rock alone is enough to make you cry.

I still need to finish that game at some point. Link's Awakening was a little frustrating at times, but it was always a fair challenge. I'm not saying that LTTP isn't a fair challenge, it's just that IMO the fun to frustrating ratio has become really uneven. Then again it is very rewarding when I finally get past something. I guess I'm just surprised at how frustrated I'm getting with it considering how many people say it's their favorite SNES game or favorite Zelda title. I don't remember screaming "YOU f***ING DICKHEAD" at any other (non Mega Man) SNES games recently.

I will just say, without spoiling the what and how (though it's really a no brainer WHO the final boss is), unless you've read the guide and know exactly what to do, you will get your ass kicked on the first go-round.

Its funny with me because for the longest time with LTTP, there were sections about a third/half way through which really pissed me off. Once I managed to get past them, yeah many of the later dungeons were a pain, but with me after getting the third maiden, the difficulty never jumps up too much (not until I fought Ganon anyway).

I mean, we basically had to play the entire 1st half of the game again in one dungeon, with our reward being a final boss battle somewhere else.

Yeah, I've beaten the game a few times but golly, this game is difficult. I consider it more so than any of the other 2-D Zelda games. I don't know why either as it seems like it should be easier but it isn't. Like someone else said, after a certain point it jumps from a 6 to a 10 and then it can be flat out frustrating to deal with.

Well the fact that at least half of the posters in this thread seem to agree makes me feel better. I'm not just sucking at a game that everybody thinks is a cakewalk.

Almost all of those Legend of Zelda games need walkthroughs or at least maps because they are so complicated.

I played it when I was twelve or so, so that might be the reason, but I can beat the game in about two saves or spending two lives. The last dungeons are pretty difficult but, honestly, not too demanding, imo. It just takes time.

Are we talking about the same Link to the Past? That game is freaking easy, especially Ganon's tower.

Most of the LoZ games are a mess. They never give you direction on where to go or what to do, and instead of adding an element of exploration it just leads to headaches running around the same couple of screens trying to see if you missed something.
