This came up in a Rumble thread a few weeks backs, but I thought it warranted its own thread. Have you ever seen a build to a Rumble where the outcome was as painfully obvious as 2003's? I remember from December 2002 up until the event itself, every Sunday Night Heat had a different Brock vignette about what's motivating him to win. Plus there weren't any main event seeds sown for anyone else in the event. Not to mention the whole Brock vs. Big Show storyline at the top of the show.
Usually with other winners you could call it either came down to two a possible two (2005), a gigantic swerve (1999, 2008) or the company finally pulling the trigger that seemed doubtful until it actually happened (2004). I think maybe 1998 or 2002 might have been *as* predictable, but 2003 was the most transparent.

The only reason I think that Austn in 1998 was worse than Lesnar in 03 as far as predictability is because at the time, they just started the dual brands, so there was a chance a Raw guy could have won the Rumble.

Only after he entered. Before that? No way. Everybody thought the injury was going to keep him out at least another few months.

Yokozuna in 1993. Who was really going to get this unstoppable new monster heel over the top rope? He was only knocked down for the first time ever in this match as well.

2002 was just as "telegraphed".

I thought McMahon in 1999 would be obvious, and I wasn't even a smark back then.

I thought Orton winning the 2009 rumble was obvious especially with the McMahon angle where he punted Vince was the last Raw before the rumble.

The Rock winning in 2000 was REALLY obvious. Come to think of it, how many weren't obvious?

Shawn Michaels in 1996 is what I think of as the most obvious Rumble winner. No one else remotely had a chance. I suppose in 1998 it was just as obvious that it would be Austin but at least it wasn't as obnoxiously overdetermined or emotionally manipulative (fake injury, "Tell Me a Lie", press conference).

1997 was painfully obvious Bret WASN'T going to win, if that counts.
When a gimmicked "writer" (Vic Venom) is on Live Wire the day of the Rumble match, telling us point-blank: "Bret Hart Will Win The 1997 Royal Rumble", you can almost hear Vince McMahon in the background screaming "1...2HeGot'Im...No!".
(Believe it or not, this was before Vince Russo even knew what a "swerve" was.)

Austin in 2001. Who didn't see that coming a mile away? It was made even more obvious when Triple H attacked him during his entrance.

He was a shock entrant in the Rumble.

Another vote for Rey.
Benoit was close though, if I remember correctly they made it really obvious he'd win the Smackdown before the rumble.

It actually takes longer to list the ones who weren't surprises.
The ones that were pretty predictable since 2000 (if you guess two people, they're one of them):
-Rock in 2000 -Austin in 2001 -Triple H in 2002 -Lesnar in 2003 -Mysterio in 2006 -Undertaker in 2007 -Orton in 2009 -Edge in 2010 -Del Rio in 2011.
BTW, predictable doesn't necessarily mean it's the wrong choice or boring. But they don't do a great job most of the time keeping you guessing at who is going to win that thing.
