Why the hell did they, and why do they continue to book Miz as some sort of tough guy, when they had essentially a ready-made dynamic right in front of them? You have Miz, the reality star turned superstar with an ego the size of Texas; in his corner, you have Maryse, the self-important diva who would love to be on the arm of a champion and brag about it to whoever would (or wouldn't) listen. Yet, outside of a handful of interactions in 2009, they never actually paired them up. They essentially stuck Maryse with Ted DiBiase, which didn't really help either of them, before sending her to NXT to do nothing much of note. Meanwhile, they corrupted, in a sense, Miz's character by trying to make him into a super-serious badass.
They could have gotten much better mileage out of both of them by keeping Miz as his original arrogant self and making the two into the obnoxious power couple. With Maryse bragging about her boyfriend being the WWE champ and Miz never shutting up about how everyone wanted to be him because of his title and his girl. Why did they never do this?

I assume the idea was that Ted Junior needed a manager/valet more than Miz did, because he was and is a wooden lump of apathy-induction while Miz is at least capable of getting heat on his own.

Bingo. The story as I know it is that WWE was going to put together Miz with Maryse in 2009 prior to her July-November absence. By the time she returned, WWE had decided Miz did not need a valet. On a side note, I really would like to know why WWE thought Maryse with Ted DiBiase was a good idea. I was saying it wouldn't work the night they were put together.

Same reason why Mccool and Undertaker were never an onscreen item.

Same reason why Mccool and Undertaker were never an onscreen item. I don't think Miz & Maryse is necrophilia.

They probably didn't want to have a chance of their relationship turning sour because they became an on screen couple. Alot of times when that happens with two people in the wrestling business who love each other the relationship doesn't last for much longer afterward.

Miz got over on his own, Dibiase didn't.

I remember the segment on Raw where Miz spoke french, and it looked like Maryse was going to jump him right there.

For why it didn't happen- Wasn't there a story before during the time about how a reason it didn't happen was because some nameless Creative member wanted Maryse for himself and started humiliating Miz onscreen as "revenge"?
