My faith in humanity...she be dead now...because I met...hands down...one of the stupidest people on the face of the Earth tonight and it boggles my mind how natural selection has not claimed this man yet.
So I was bartending tonight and it was pretty slow. I was going to leave early but decided to stick around for another hour in case the girl I was working with got a pop. I ran back to check on a customers food order and when I got back there was this Mensa member standing next to the bar.
I asked him if I could help him and he asked if we had any creme liquors. I told him the only creamy liquors we had were Baileys and Godiva Chocolate Liquor. He wanted to see what the Bailey's looked like so I poured a little so he could see. He said he'd take some so I told him it was $8.00. I made him a Bailey's on the rocks, he handed me ten bucks and he took his drink. Then he tried to take the bottle. This genius though he was getting a bottle of freaking Baileys for $8.00.
When I stopped him, he said for $8.00 I better be putting more liquor in his glass. I told him he paid for 2 ounces of liquor and he got what he paid for. He said he thinks he made a mistake and I told him if he didn't want the drink to give it back and I'll refund his money since I hadn't charged it yet. (Better him not getting a damn drink at all than him chugging it and then making up some story to get a free drink.) I preferred to throw the drink out and comp it than listen to this idiot.
Then when his server brought his check, he complained about how much his check was and how it cost thirty something dollars for three people when they split food. Well brainiac, the whole rack of ribs you ordered was half of your bill right there. Maybe if you'd learn to READ the prices on the menu and do some basic elementary school math you'd have a general idea of how much it is.
God this guy just had me in a state of disbelief. You can't even buy a bottle of liquor in a liquor store that doesn't taste like charcoal for eight bucks let alone Baileys.

sadly there are people that are more stupid...like my boss. my quick job description, i do supply for the navy. so when we have to get supplies for my command, we're the ones that have to go and buy them, but before we do that we have to find out how much they cost because we can only spend X amount of money in a single day. one such time we had to buy a bunch of stuff including garbage bags, and had it all budgeted out, but he didn't like the ones that i put on the list and wanted a different type that cost more, but wanted the same quantity. math time:
the ones we were budgeted to get - $22.40 X 20 = ? the ones he wanted - $31.75 X 20 = ?
i no s*** got into an argument with him for five minutes because, according to him, its was only a $0.50 difference to get the ones he wanted, and could not get it through his head we could not spend over a certain amount of money in a single day. sadly, that is not the worst of his stupidity. the worst would be when he told me i misspelled my own name on a form, and had to get into another lengthy argument with because there is a silent letter in my first name.

Introduce that man to a calculator stat! That and how dare you not know how to spell your own name! Maybe if you'd learn how to spell your own name you could figure out how his math makes sense.

I worked in retail for about 5 years and I saw some pretty stupid people in my time. They'd come in believing that store policies were state or federal laws and that they could make up there own rules on pricing problems. Two of the stupidest and most common claims were - 1. That if an item had a mismarked price (an incorrect price tag, an old sale sign accidentally left up, etc.) then they believed for some insane reason they were supposed to get it not for the incorrectly posted price (which was store policy), but for FREE! 2. If an expensive item is thrown (usually by another customer) by a price sign for a cheaper item, they're supposed to get it for the cheaper price. I don't care how many times you find a $15 bottle of shampoo on the Entemann's snack cake rack, you're not getting it for the same price as a 99 cent box of cookies. This should be common sense.
We need to get businesses to stop mindlessly following and pushing this "the customer is always right" policy. All it does is foster a consumer society of idiots and thieves.

That's pretty tame overall, actually. Sure, it's annoying to deal with people like that, but working in fast food and at a newspaper meant I saw all manner of crazy, stupid, and crazy stupid.

Oh, I know we've all seen some crazy stupid people, but this is the first time I've ever had my jaw drop at it. Who the hell goes out to a brand name restaurant chain, walks up to their bar and thinks they're going to buy a bottle of Baileys for eight bucks. When he then asked me how much the bottle would be, I just wanted to tell him $8.00 for two ounces...this many ounces is in the bottle...you do the math and tell me.

When working at Blockbuster, I met two college age girls who didn't know you still had to pay to rent a movie and thought it was a freaking rip-off.

Working in the service industry is all about the good regulars. Good regulars always order the same thing, never try to hassle you on price (unless it goes up from the normal price) and pretty much keep your establishment afloat in troubled economic times (i.e. right now). Unlike random crazy stupids that come in wanting to buy expensive alcohol bottles for under $10, regulars will more likely talk to employees with respect for the role they play as part of the customer's daily routine. The regulars in effect turn business as usual into something very informal and not at all like regular work, and you don't generally need the 'kid gloves' for them since they can pretty much serve themselves practically.
Unfortunately for every good regular you get, there's about a dozen crazy stupids who will come test your mettle on any given shift. I had an idiot come through after 2am to try and by beer (illegal in FL) and got pissed AT ME when I told him THE LAW prohibits beer sales until 7am. Then the genius wants to ring up cigarettes and gasoline on his EBT card and got upset with me when I told him his food stamps don't cover non-food items (duh). He ended up sticking around outside and weirding my customers out by begging for spare change from whoever came by for gas until the cops came by to run him off...
...until next night when he came back to do it all over again to the next night shifters. Working at a gas station you have the added fun-factor of worrying if a customers is really crazy/stupid or if they're trying to case the joint for a future robbery, and of course shop-lifting runs rampant because people think they're entitled to a free bag of 1.49 chips in this economy without earning or paying for it.
TL;DR version - sign me up on your Lost Faith in Humanity Tour!
