is not very metal. Seems like the typical AI contestant to me, do what you're told to do and try to appeal to as many people as possible. "Yeah we need you to sound like Nickelback and Bon Jovi so you can appeal to the housewives and soccer moms." Blah.

His band looks like it's playing for a completely different song than the words that are coming out of his mouth.

After watching that video, I have no idea how any sensible person could think major record labels and reality singing shows are a good thing for music.

IMO, the only thing worse than having a bad song is having an unmemorable song. People remember when you have a terrible song (see "Friday"), but nobody remembers a boring, generic song and that's what we have here.
The guy has a great voice, but nobody will remember a song like that - it's so corporate and done to death it actually hurts. Sadly though major record labels are afraid to take risks, so you get an outcome like this.

The 1st time I ever heard of him was earlier this week when a couple members of In This Moment quit the band to form a new band with this guy.

Screw what people think, I love the guy, he's from my hometown, loves wrestling, and goes to the same local wrestling shows that I do ...Not that I've ever actually listened to his music, but still.

Which guy was he? I know a few guys have been referred to as "the metal guy".

From what I can gather, he picked an Iron Maiden or Judas Priest song to sing... something like that. Did a pretty good job, and since he didn't pick Nickelback or Nirvana... they decided to call him "the metal guy."
I'm not really an authority on the issue, that's just what I gleaned from other sites.

So two guys left THIS band...
...an actual metal band, to join this Durbin fellow.
I hate money-hungry musical artists.

If he picked a song by The Ramones or The Clash...would he be "that punk guy"?
What about KMFDM or Skinny Puppy..."that industrial guy"?
F***in' sheesh!

David Cook, is the closest thing that idol ever had to a true rocker, and even he, has to much "PoP" in him. Sadly, real rock has no place on a reality show, except for "Rockstar" (INXS and SUPERNOVA)

^ I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers that show. It was a million times better than all these mainstream singing competitions. I was hoping so badly they'd do more seasons with other famous bands. So two guys left THIS band... ...an actual metal band, to join this Durbin fellow. I hate money-hungry musical artists. Sounds like they made the right choice. If I didn't know better I'd think his video was audio-swapped. That sucks, he's not a bad singer but everything else is too generic.

Sadly, real rock has no place on a reality show, except for "Rockstar" (INXS and SUPERNOVA) Bo Bice was more of a traditional "rocker" than Cook. But his career followed a disappointingly similar "rock by way of pop" track.

Cook has stayed to most connected to rock post-idol given not by much though. he's done some pretty good covers, but his "original" stuff is to "poppy" probably can't shake off the idol connection

Sounds like they made the right choice. Be part of a pseudo metal band or be part of a generic pop rock band. The only real difference is that they are making more money with the latter.
