Has to be Alice In Chains, but it's a stretch to call them grunge.
Jerry Cantrell is one of the most consistently brilliant musicians out there.

I thought they hated being called that name? (and also, grunge referred only to the bands within the Seattle scene. smashing pumpkins and others would be alternative) Most bands did hate being called grunge. I'm not even sure that it's an actual genre. However, when people say grunge, they are simply referring to bands from the early-mid 90s that dressed grungy. It's unfair, but it's also unfair to lump together all hair metal, all nu metal, etc. Really everything is different.

Don't really even consider them a grunge band, but Pearl Jam. One of the consistently great bands of this generation.

In this order:
Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam
Honorable mention to Neil Young, a man considered to be "the godfather of grunge".

It's one of those things that happens because it's easiest for people. Even going with that definition, it's still hard for me to say, since I like basically everything that's been said so far. I'm torn between Alice in Chains and STP. Soundgarden is great too but I don't listen to them as much as AIC and STP.

Stone Temple Pilots are, by far, my favourites. You can put all the rest sans Soundgarden as 2nd. I don't really like Soundgarden for some reason :S

Alice in Chains are the only ones metal enough for me to enjoy Soundgarden's first 4 albums have a very metal taste to them.

I thought they hated being called that name? (and also, grunge referred only to the bands within the Seattle scene. smashing pumpkins and others would be alternative) I consider grunge and alternative to both be nonsensical terms to desribe music. Grunge was a term that nobody who actually listened to the Seattle rock scene of the late 80s-early 90s used to describe it. The guys who ran Sub Pop used it for a bit, and somehow it became a "buzz word". By the time the term reached widespread usage, it had become something of a joke amongst the punk types of the day. The fact that a ton of crappy rock groups suddenly donned flannel shirts and got signed by major labels as "grunge acts" only made it seem even more silly. And alternative...what does that even mean? If you liked alternative music in 1994, that generally meant you listened to Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, Nine Inch Nails, REM, or something of that ilk. All of those bands were in the top 40 music charts with regular MTV and radio rotation, making them an alternative to...what, exactly? Sorry. Music snob rant mode ended. Glad to see the Screaming Trees get some love. And Singles? A terrible movie, but a great soundtrack.

I'd say Alice in Chains but I think of them more as a Metal band then Grunge, although what "grunge" actually is is a bit of a debate I suppose.

To me AIC Soundgarden were more based on metal side and Nirvana more on the punk side but to me they were all grunge. AIC really werent that heavy compared to real metal bands at that time and how many metal bands would put out unplugged and acosutic albums. Not many if any at all.

At some point the definition of alternative changed just like the definition of indie has changed. They were mainstream by that time but they still were rooted in what alternative traditionally was before then.
