Not big on the genre, but Nirvana has the songs that I most recognize and like, so them

I grew up with these bands. Nirvana will always be the standard bearer, but for me few bands can match the raw power and emotional depths of Alice in Chains.
Although lumped into the category I've always been a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan. I went through a period in my life that I did my best to get anything pumpkins related.

Nirvana. But I liked several of the grunge bands.

They're debatable as grunge, but STP.

Nirvana and Alice in Chains. I like Soundgarden a lot but haven't heard much of their early stuff, STP's great if they count, as is early Silverchair, and I can't stand Pearl Jam. I like Mudhoney, The Screaming Trees, and Green River but, again, haven't heard much at all from them.

Since no one else is going to give them love, Screaming Trees. EDIT: Oh wait looks like the person above me did.

Probably a tie between Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana.
Since we're on the subject, I've always thought Pearl Jam was pretty much worthless, and that Alice In Chains are boring and overrated.

Nirvana was the "cool" choice but Alice in Chains and Soundgarden had SO much more going on musically that it's not even a fair comparison. As for who's the best between Alice and Soundgarden, I'm gonna go with AiC but it's kind of a bit of a coin toss.

I've always loved Grunge since I first heard it, even if I was a little late to the scene. My top 3 are (in order):
1. Alice In Chains 2. Nirvana 3. Soundgarden
I'm a huge STP fan but I'm unsure if I'd consider them as they were much more experimental than your everyday grunge bands (even more so than Pearl Jam, in my opinion, who I could never really get into). Their first album, Core, yeah maybe. From Purple on though, no.

I thought they hated being called that name? (and also, grunge referred only to the bands within the Seattle scene. smashing pumpkins and others would be alternative)
