So, has anyone else watched AMC's new show? And if so, what did you think of the pilot?
I'll admit, I went into the pilot knowing jack squat about the series outside of the advert AMC kept playing over and over the last few weeks. So pretty much, all I knew was the show took place in the Old West and a railroad played an important part in the show.
I did not know that the show was framed around the building of the Transcontinental Railroad.
I must say, I loved the hell out of the pilot. And Colm Meaney just nails it, I mean just nails it as our main seedy business man villain. Seriously, I hope he at least gets nominated for an award next year at the Emmy Awards if he can keep this up.
I'm a sucker for Old West period pieces, though, so I may be a little bit biased, but hell, I'm hooked for the rest of the season.

As a pilot, it did what it was supposed to.... introduced the characters and gave us the basic premise. It gave just enough to keep me interested, but not so much that they blew their wad.
I'm definitely gonna keep watching it as I see big potential for the show.

I was hooked the first second I saw the preview. I'm a huge sucker of anything Old West. It looked like the best thing to come along since Deadwood. I still can't get over the terrible terrible name though, such a lost opportunity of something badass and appropriate.
EDIT: I Googled it. Turns out that name is very appropriate for the time. I always thought it came for the 1950s greaser era hot rod racing, not the 1860s. My bad, you learn something new every day.

Yeah when I looked up the title on Wikipedia, the first thing I was directed to was the actual "Hell on Wheels", the brothels, saloons, and gambling houses that traveled alongside the construction teams on the railroad. That actually makes the scene between the preacher wanting to set up a church in the Hell on Wheels and the prostitutes he met make much more sense. I mean I knew they were prostitutes, but I didn't entirely know WHY there were prostitutes there. Like you said, learn something new every day.
