It isn't America's #3 sport. It is #3 in average attendance, which, as the article points out is deceiving because MLS teams play their games in stadiums bigger than most of the arenas NBA and NHL teams play their games in.

Soccer's always been pretty big with kids in America.
Also, if basketball ever comes back, they're apparently dropping ticket prices. The Sixers have already announced huge cuts to their prices around here, anyways. I'd imagine it's a temporary bump.

Also, it is technically the #4 sport in attendance, as NASCAR has a high ass average attendance, certainly more than MLB, and possibly more than NFL.

I think that with the growing Hispanic/Latino population Soccer will continue to get bigger in America.

I think that with the growing Hispanic/Latino population Soccer will continue to get bigger in America. Maybe but as of now its still a mostly white-collar sport here.

It's somewhat deceptive since most MLS games are played in football stadiums and there's a huge skew with the Seattle Sounders.
The average figure sounds pretty impressive. But that's not even half capacity in probably all the stadiums MLS games are held (except Seattle, maybe). So it can look pretty depressing if you're watching an MLS game on TV and see a ton of empty seats.

This only reminds me that the NBA will probably not survive a year-long lockout.

I'll tell you right now. Being a fan of the USMNT is like being a fan of the Chicago Cubs: never-ending disappointment.

I like how they say the "England League Championship" to try and make people think that MLS attendance is better than in England. Even though the "League Championship" isn't the top tier here.

Why should I be surprised that a sport(NBA)with 0 current attendance has a lower attendance than the MLS?
Somebody still needs to show me why that's news.
THIS JUST IN, the MLS has also recently surpassed the recent attendance figures for the Gladiatorial Lions/Christians Games in the Roman Colosseum!

Kansas City is a big part of it here. It was about on it's way out until the overhaul (KC Wizards became Sporting KC), the Livestrong Sports Park (which is INSANELY amazing), and their recent run. Behind the Chiefs 180 from their 0-3 start, it's the talk of the town here.

Larger stadiums plus fewer teams and games probably skew the numbers a bit.

There are some fantastic MLS fan bases, no doubt, but ask a casual sports fan to name five MLS TEAMS, nevermind players, and they'd be at a loss.
