...Was genius.
It was supposed to tick people off. And insulting fans clearly wouldn't have done the trick. Thats what they wanted. They built it up, and Cena brushed it off just to piss the fans off.
He was clearly going ultra good guy, especially when he stalled at the end. He was blatantly repeating himself.

I've been saying this the whole time. If Cena goes heel he's going to turn the Fruity Pebbles up to 11. Considering the entire show they built up that Cena'd Lost His Smile or something a bit more epic than the promo he delivered, the deliberately boyscoutish, wishy-washy, limp-hearted promo seemed like it was designed to deliberately subvert people's expectations and piss people off.
They're smart enough to know that if they just turned him psycho screaming heel he'd get cheered by the smarks.
Other evidence I have is the pseudo-regression in his new obnoxiously green t-shirt design in terms of playing right up into the Fruity Pebble sort of designs that he's been taking flak for he whole time.

He gets the biggest crowd reaction by staying the way he is so it worked fine.

What if Cena has been heel this whole time I think he has been for quite a while. He might have turned face if he actually cut a heel promo or AAed Rocky.

It really was genius, and it showed exactly why he's a far better performer than some fans give him credit for.
Cena's Ned Flanders-esque self satisfaction riles people up, and if he lost his smile or went on a rampage, he'd have too many fans thinking he was cool. A heel Cena should NOT be cool, in any fashion.

This guy literally said "I'm not going lash out at you guys" and the fans booed.
You have to approach this completely different from any other situation.

I'm glad he threw Bryan a bone by acknowledging this misusage of the "yes" chants by the crowd...seriously just a fun time.

Cena has been a meta-heel for the last 12 months. It's too easy to be a heel by smashing a Jack Daniel's over your opponent or cashing in Money In The Bank on a weakened babyface. John Cena manages to make people hate him by being nice. Best heel ever.

The only problem with this is that it won't work everywhere. He would have to do something different in the more Pro-Cena areas if they want him to sustain the boos he's getting.

It doesn't have to work everywhere. There will likely never EVER be a consistent one way reaction for Cena as long as he wrestles. He could beat up Ryder or Rey and get a good few weeks completely booed but even then I doubt it.

This is exactly what I wanted from a 'heel' John Cena. So I'm very happy. Excited for Raw now.

Cena and his character make me angry, but the way they've gone about this is worthy of appreciation. I kind of see it as Cena is the WWE. Mercilessly heckled, constantly disparaged, but he maintains his course. After all the years of hating on the guy, I can admit now that he is better than I gave him credit for.

I can't help but hearken back to David Shoemaker of Grantland.com's article about the average fan's perspective on John Cena's character.

I liked that he actually seemed like he was having to cope with the loss. They could have done more, and not really in a "he has to turn heel" way, but it could have been a lot worse.
