What was he doing? Who was he feuding with? Was he getting face pops at the time? My viewing was limited at the time so I am trying to remember for the life of me. Because as a kid I remember going WTF when he got the helicopter entrance and I was like The Narcissist? When did he become Mister USA (not Tony Atlas)

I think he was a surprise entrant in the challenge, which is why a lot of us were befuddled when he showed up.

He was the Narcissist and a heel. At the Wrestlemania brunch he Ko'd the hitman, and then a few months later he was an all american hero....

I recently read somewhere that Crush was supposed to slam Yoko but legitimately pulled his back trying. There were also very loud "HOGAN" chants when the helicopter landed.
It really does seem like something they pulled out of thin air.

I think one of the last things he did before he slammed Yoko was at the King of the Ring, he seemed to be ready to start a feud with Tatanka (as there was a double elimination for them from the tournament).

I recently read somewhere that Crush was supposed to slam Yoko but legitimately pulled his back trying. I highly doubt this. If Crush was the plan then why would they have Lex Luger wearing an American Flag button down shirt ready to board a helicopter nearby? From what I remember, after WrestleMania IX he had a house show feud with Bret Hart that never really went anywhere, as well as another house show feud with Tatanka after their match at King of the Ring 93, which also never went anywhere. While he was definitely a heel and definitely getting a heel response from the fans at the time, he wasn't doing anything special that needed to be quickly dropped when he made his out-of-nowhere face turn. My guess is the WWF just kind of chose him at the last minute because he had a lot of similarities with Hulk Hogan - blonde, amazing physique, capable of performing a lot of amazing power spots, etc. He also had main event runs, as well as a World Title reign, in the past in WCW. Sadly he lacked Hogan's charisma and never got over anywhere near as much as the WWF wanted.

He was just stagnant as the narcisist heel and it was his appearance on the USS Intrepid that turned him immediately. There was no build up to becoming the all american babyface before that. The people cheered for him as soon as he stepped off the helicopter because he was wearing an american flag t-shirt, his appearance was a surprise, and because everyone who had tried to slam Yoko before him had failed.

Also, this thread is making me wonder who had a better slam on Yokozuna: Luger or Ahmed.
Don't think Hogan ever got a chance to slam Yoko, but I could be wrong.

Did Heenan try and stop him or get in his face afterwards? I'm sure I remember it like that.

Hogan did try to slam Yoko at KOTR 93 but he failed to do so. And yes, Luger was basically a heel and not going much of anywhere as the Narcissist. One of the most perplexing face turns ever, so it's no shock that he didn't get over.
