I know Shawn was injured for the 8 man match but why did they chose to put Savio Vega in the match instead? It just seemed like a random selection because Savio was still in the Boriquas and had no affiliation with either DX or the New Age Outlaws. Was there just not anyone available aside from him?
Also kudos to the announcers for putting DX over as a threat. Nowadays you have commentators complain that the heel was trying to run away from the match but in this case J.R. puts DX over huge by saying they were more than willing to fight Austin, Owen, Funk, and Foley 3 on 4. That's how you make your threat to the face look legit, make them more of a badass and less of a bitch. It makes for much more effective storytelling.

I could be way off on this, because I was pretty young, but didn't Austin jump Savio and beat the hell out of him a month prior, before the Royal Rumble that year or something? I also remember them feuding a couple years prior, but I don't know if they brought it up or not.

Didn't he help them attack Austin or something, I know there was a reason behind this.

Savio had a history with Austin that was quite well documented so it wasn't a completely nonsensical addition.
The idea of treating Savio Vega as a star of anything, on the other hand, IS completely nonsensical and how he managed a feud even with a pre-huge Austin is beyond me.

I have read somewhere that during that time, the Boricuas were sort of helping DX. Of course, I wasn't watching that time, so I wouldn't know.

I always thought it was a combination of Savio's history with Austin, plus his willingness to take hardcore-type moves in the match.

I was watching this time and can confirm this as the reason. The Boriquas had a loose affiliation with DX where they would help them with beatdowns. The New Age Outlaws had the same affiliation with DX (this was before they became members), but of course were a lot more over than the Boriquas. Hence, why the Outlaws were billed in the main event and Savio was quietly offered as the substitute for Shawn Michaels the day of the PPV.

My problem with that replacement wasn't that Savio Vega was out of place in kayfabe, because he wasn't really. My problem was that they advertised Shawn and though Savio was a good replacement. I've never even watched that PPV but did Shawn even appear?
It really sucks that we never got to see Shawn, HHH, and the Outlaws team together as far as I know. I think that match would have been historically significant.

'98, Austin had: -Co-main evented WrestleMania 13 in one of the greatest matches ever -Had a solid IC title feud with The Rock -Won the 98 Rumble, obviously setting him up for a title win at WM 14 What had Savio done by that point in his career to make him a bigger name than Austin? Please tell me.

I think he meant Savio was higher on the totem pole than Austin at the time of their 1996 feud, in response to the other poster expressing disbeilef that Savio ever got to feud to with Austin even if it was before Austin became huge.

My 1st house show was in Cincy a few weeks before that PPV, Shawn was advertised but did not appear... Savio took his place on the card.
Savios group had, as previously mentioned, been helping DX a bit plus he had a ton of experience working with Austin which made it work kayfabe. I think they hadnt entirely given up on him at that point and it was a good spot to pur him in without hurting anyone elses feuds leading into 'mania.
SAVIO VEGA facts:
*1st to defeat Steve Austin in the WWF *1st to defeat The Rockin the WWF *1st to be hit with an official Stone Cold Stunner * In the WWF he defeated future world chamions Austin, Rock, HHH, Jeff Jarrett, JBL, & Yokozuna.

I remember watching this PPV at the time (I was 7), and I wasn't really mad that Michaels wasn't there. I thought it made Savio look like a bigger deal, and I absolutely loved that Owen was getting a big time match.

Infact on every door of the arena there was crude print out with plain black text saying due to the RR back injury Shawn would not be appearing tonight.
