I've been thinking... between the rises of Zack Ryder and Brodus Clay, the latest surge in popularity for Santino, and R-Truth's recent gimmick shift, it seems most of WWE's prominent, popular midcard faces at the moment are being played for laughs. Hell, even Ryback's segments are goofier than the typical jobber, squash, being built around having dorky losers come out and act overjoyed to be in WWE before getting annihilated.
I wonder if this is a coincidence or a deliberate shift in policy. If it's the later, I actually think it could work out well for these guys; making these guys funny is a way to get them over and keep them over even when they're looking like losers, and since the main use of midcard faces in WWE these days is for them to get their asses kicked by heels getting built up to wrestle the main babyfaces, they're sure going to look like losers an awful lot.

There's Sin Cara, but he's still out injured. There are also upper-midcard faces like Rey Mysterio & Big Show, along with lower-midcard faces like Ted DiBiase.

It's certainly making them a lot more memorable.
I can see someone looking back fondly on the current era - on the days of Kofi, Zack Ryder, Sin Cara, Santino Marella, and Brodus Clay. Much the same way that the Bushwackers, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, and other midcarders from the past are looked at fondly today, regardless of how dignified they were - because they were unique, they were interesting, and they were of their era.
I can see there being a HUGE amount of nostalgia for the current midcard.

I think it's because a lack of midcard storylines means a lack of justification to turn midcard heels face, but by God are there a ton of heels right now.
Doesn't help that every single person that's debuted or redebuted so far has been heel, with the possible exception of Ryback (still don't know what he's supposed to be) and Titus & Young.
