We all know that pretty much up to and through the Attitude Era, if you wanted to make it to the main event you pretty much had to pay your dues and bust your ass as a jobber in the various territories or between WCW and WWE, et cetera, with for the most part justifiable exceptions for people with legit backgrounds like Shamrock and Angle.
This seemed to dwindle off after the Invasion and the creation of the WWE farm system, though it's definitely come back as of late, with all the indy stars on the roster and in the main event.
That being said, it seemed like for a period at the beginning of the farm system that there were an awful lot of guys coming in that were just groomed straight to be WWE products, an argument that still gets levied against a bunch of FCW guys, though more so in the last few years vs. now.
That doesn't mean they've made it up on the card, though. I guess what I'm trying to say is, who on the roster do you think has paid the least dues, relatively speaking?
I'm definitely going with Orton. Aside from the hugely obvious benefits of being the son of a WWE Legend (using their definition of Legend), according to Wikipedia at least, he spent a grand total of one month in an indy fed before being signed to WWE Developmental, and spent a single year there before being moved to the main roster. Then it took what, less than a year for the Legend Killer gimmick to start? That's an almost insultingly meteoric rise when you think about it, especially when contrasting it with someone like Punk or D-Bry.
Say what you want about Orton, but I think that the sheer number of conveniences in his situation are rather hard to top, and off the top of my head I can't think of anybody else without a legitimate background (so no Lesnar, and I'm not counting Orton's high school wrestling since that's not the same as being an NCAA champion) that just shot through so quickly.

I'm gonna go with Del Rio, I think. He just...yeah. I like Del Rio but goddamn they are pushing him so hard by the time he stops moving he'll have aged less than everybody else in the roster.

Del Rio wrestled for 10 years before coming to WWE though, I'm not a huge fan but its not like WWE just picked him out of a muscle mag and said "you're gonna be a champ son!"
I'd say the Cena/Orton/Batista trio, as good as 2 of them are.

About Sheamus/Del Rio, they had the easiest paths to the top upon entering the WWE, but also toiled away in the indies for a long time and didn't get their pushes until they were in their thirties. Orton definitely had the easiest path to the top in terms of overall career development.

the rock.did he ever work for an indy?i think he went from bombing out in the cfl to the wwe main roster 6 months later.to the wwe title in less than 2 years. He was in USWA for a couple of years, he wasnt very good there. |

Considering what The Rock's life was before joining the WWE, I really wouldn't consider his path to be one of the easiest. Yeah, his life issues weren't wrestling related, but the guy had to fight hard to progress in life. |

Goldberg, by a lot. He was at the Power Plant for like a year, and then comes in and doesn't have to wrestle a lengthy match for years. And soon enough, he was the face of WCW (or as much as he could be with Nash and Hogan being dickheads) despite never really wrestling a match longer than 10 minutes or so.

WWE pretty much had their mind set on Orton being a top player since he first debuted on the main roster. EDIT: Actually, as others have pointed out, Goldberg, Kurt Angle, and Lesnar might actually have Orton beat in this department. |

In Orton's defense having Triple H hand pick you for the biggest stable at that time wasn't something he probably planned.

Orton, but I'd say it worked pretty well in his case. and he didn't REALLY become a big time main eventer until his second world title run, which was like 2 years after his total joke of a first run.

Angle and Lesnar don't really count for me. Angle was a Olympic gold medallist, something which was the culmination of years of toil. Then he gets signed by WWE and spends over a year in developmental. Similar with Lesnar, NCAA champion and he spent 2 years in developmental. Orton did a few indy shows, one year of developmental and that's it.
