Not a good year to be a hated dictator. Don't forget Gaddafi.

Honestly, I'm gonna kinda miss the guy. He's that fun crazy uncle who thinks he's big shit, but normally ends up with egg on his face and everyone laughing at him because of something he decides. So long good sir, the world is a better, yet less crazy, place without you.

Not a surprise at all. He was not a young man, and there have been rumors about health problems from heart attacks to alzheimers for years now. The fact that he ramped up the efforts to groom his son to succeed him in the last few years made it clear he was not long for this earth. I only wish his passing meant North Korea would be free and the two Korea's would be reunited. Sadly this changes nothing-the truth is he never held much real power and neither will his son after this. Kim Il Sung was a powerhouse, but he established a government where the power largely rests in the hands of the military, not the dictator himself. This is just a changing of the hands of symbolic leadership. Best of hopes for the people of North Korea.

I'd love to see Arab Spring II: Asian Boogalou, but it's going to be more a Castro-to-Castro line of succession, I think.

I'd like to imagine that this would lead into North Korea possibly ending its alienation from the world community, so its people can finally have access to some decent resources (including, but not limited to, more energy and food), but I have my doubts.

His successor should swerve the world and be reasonable, rational and willing to talk in an open and friendly way with South Korea.

How could you forget him? He's like the Lady Gaga of evil dictators. Because he wasn't quite evil enough. He was the Diet Coke of evil. Just 1 calorie, not evil enough.

I don't know. Those people are completely brainwashed. I found this elsewhere. The reaction of North Korea when his father, "the eternal leader" Kim Il Sung died in 1994. I expect something similar in the following weeks. Completely mesmerising.

What bothers me about that clip is if these people are being genuine, then it's the most oppresive and terrifying thing I've ever seen. If they're not, they must be terrified they'll be shot for not mourning hard enough. Oh, and it's already started. This is the official death announcement from North Korean television:

Because of media portrayal, anything positive in the life of a N. Korean(which sadly, for most, is not a whole lot) is directly because of Kim Jong Il. There was one scene where someone receives medical treatment, and rather than thanking the doctor or modern science, they directly thank Kim.

Then, and I really hate to say this, maybe it is best that North Korea stay in this isolation from the rest of the world. IF freedom does ever come and all this is swept away, imagine how devastating it will be the the national psyche for North Koreans to find out how deceived they have been.

That sounds wildly preferable to their current situation, and not just them, but those kidnapped and brought into the country, a not uncommon occurrence. The truth hurts, but it beats making sure your kids and their kids live the lie.

Isn't his son supposed to be his successor? And isn't he said to be just as big of an asshole? Things probably aren't going to change much.
