Yeah, a combination of me being a slacker and a depressed alcoholic(combination of my mom dying and my sister distancing herself from me, meaning I essentially have no immediate family any more) caused me to have a terrible GPA this semester(less than a 2.0, but my cumulative is still around 2.6). Now I have to go through a huge process just to see if they'll let me back in for the Spring. I think I'll have to go back to the town where my college is at least 3 or 4 days earlier than I was planning in order to conduct a reinstatement interview(which costs $50), plus I have a ton of paperwork to fill out, and it's still no guarantee I'll be allowed it(although I've had friends who have been in the past, so I don't think I'll be kicked out, I hope ), and then either have to drop a class to take a UCOLL class, or take 8 "wellbeing" seminars throughout the semester. Don't know which I want to do out of those, as the UCOLL class may potentially delay my progress, but the seminars are going to be a huge time commitment outside of class(which I don't know about ya'll but doesn't that seem like a bad idea to force someone who needs to focus more on their studies to do?), and meet with my advisor a few extra times(which won't be terrible, but still time out of my day that I don't really have between work and class). A silver lining to this dark cloud is that it appears that my financial aid is not being cut/denied from this, although it has been changed(although I think that has more to do with the state's budget issues rather than my own. But seriously, they want my dead parents to somehow take out $1300 in loans for me! WTF?!?!, and apparently, the deadline for that passed, even though they JUST changed it) At the end of the day, I know it's all my fault. I f***ed up, big time, and now I want nothing more than to do well in school, and I plan on focusing much more on my studies. The one class I paid attention to/went to this semester I still got a B- in, so I am capable(I got a 3.4 last semester, too). I just hope they let me back in. Without school, I literally have nowhere left to go, and I don't want to join the military.

I'm not sure what's available to you in America in terms of counselling for depression and alcoholism, but if you can, get some. I'd suggest you address those issues before you bog yourself down with the stress and pressure of school applications and loans.
As for the military, there are always alternatives. I'd deliver pizzas before I resorted to that. In any case, being a depressed alcoholic slacker isn't likely to feel any better in the military. It's not really addressing the problem.

thing is, my school loans are basically the way I pay my rent, and my job is through the school, so without school, I'm F'd in the A.

Hmm, well you have a legitimate hardship excuse. I can't speak for the school but, considering your situation, I think you'll be able to come back.

I assure you that there isn't one hard-ass prof/dean on the planet. If you're in that much academic trouble, then explain your situation. It's not a common one and you deserve some time and space. You'll be back in good standing as long as they know what you're going through.
Please let the appropriate folks know and get back on your feet.
I'm sorry to hear about everything, but I pray you'll be alright and you have plenty of people rooting for you.

I'm sorta going through a similar situation with school right now. If they didn't cut your financial aid, then you're probably just on financial aid or academic probation, which is for people who have a bad semester. If your goal is to get back in school and you are able to focus on classes, then you can probably speak to a financial aid or academic counselor and explain your situation to them and possibly get your full financial aid back. The worst thing they can do is say nope, but it never hurts to try. Make sure you get all your other troubles sorted out because I know it can be a pain focusing on class with several other things going on. Also, most schools have someone you can talk to about depression and such, if you don't mind opening up. Good luck to you and I hope everything works out in your favor. Remember you have our support. Yeah, just called the FinAid office and I have to basically re-apply. f***. I definitely can't afford to do this all on my own.

If you really have alcoholic problems try to go to some AA meetings. You don't want to go down the other road and get stuck into not being able to stop drinking.

welp, I submitted my F.A. denial reinstatement application, much of which asked about possible circumstances out of my control. I hate saying stuff like this because I feel as though I'm exploiting the death of my mother, but I am somewhat lucky that the school is sympathetic towards those in my situation.

Update: OK, so got an appointment set up with an academic adviser, for the 4th(5 days before school starts, but whatever). From what they said on the phone, I WILL be reinstated no problem, as long as I attend the interview/appointment/meeting dealio. So the only hurdle left is my financial aid. If that remains denied(which, considering the circumstances, I really hope not. I've had a couple buddies that screwed up just because they're lazy and they got back in and I know for a fact that their parents aren't paying for their school), then I guess I drop out a year shy of completing my degree So, now I play the waiting and hoping games.

I had a rough semester myself, but with the brutal curve placed on law school exams I legitimately have no clue how I did.
I've never seen any correlation between the amount of effort I've put in and the result that comes out. I've also seen little correlation between how I think I did on an exam and how I actually did.
This time, I think I may have really blown a few of them, and my entire grade is based on one exam.

So I'm not going to find out if I have financial aid until the first week of January, apparently. In other words, I won't know until I'm already back. So I might have to go back, only to have to move quit a couple days later.

ok, looks like my aid most likely won't be cut, although I did receive a strange reply. They told me they "don't fund minors", and so I probably wouldn't get funding for a certain class. Except for the fact that a minor is required for my major, and there is no difference in tuition costs if you're taking 4 classes or 5 in the fall or spring(summer they charge you per class), and I've never not had a non-major class funded.
