With the trailer for The Hobbit out, and knowing that plans are now officially in motion for The Dark Tower to make it to the big and small screen, I find myself yearning yet again to see another epic book-trilogy made into cinema magic. I'm a big fan of Frank Herbert's Dune trilogy, though I far prefer his original books over this son's continuations of the series. Dune has already been adapted into other media twice before, but both times I feel the results were lacking. That 1980's David Lynch movie, while a terrific film to watch while drunk, veered so far from the story and was full of cheesy costumes and lousy acting. The 1990's TV series was much truer to the story but had nowhere hear the kind of epic sets, costumes, and special effects I feel the series deserves. Dune deserves the full four star treatment of The Hobbit, Harry Potter, or The Chronicles of Narnia. It deserves A-list actors and a lasting cinematic legacy. There were plans for a new film based off the book just a few years ago that fell apart last year. I can see how it would be hard to adapt Dune into a movie, as the original book's plot is very complex and actually has several stories going on at the same time. I've felt for a while that the first novel would probably have to be broken into two or three separate films on its own just to help draw the story out in its entirety. But still, I think Dune should be a motion picture with all the trimmings, and I hope I am not alone.

There was one made around 2003, it starred a guy who shared my name and has done jack since. I hate him so much.

You mean that syfy channel steaming pile of crap in which they couldn't even pronounce Harkonnen? I'd love to see a new Dune movie, but if it turned a profit, I'm afraid Brian Herbert would see it as permission to keep hacking away at his father's legacy with these terrible prequel novels.
