Inspired by the World vs. 64 thread, let's compare two of the best Mario games. Which is better in your eyes: the redefining NES classic or the SNES launch title?

SMB3. I've said before that I consider SMW to be one of the weaker 2d Marios, and most of that has to do with level design. You had some interesting concepts in there, but a lot of it just feels very by the numbers and comparatively uncreative when stacked up against SMB3. I've always heard that Miyamoto never really wanted to make the game and that it was rushed through development pretty quickly to get out in time for the launch of the SNES. Frankly it kinda shows.

This is a much tougher one. I think I probably had more fun with World overall as a kid, but SMB3 does have a lot more packed in there. More ideas, more variety in powerups, and more to do.

Very close, but Mario 3's variety of levels puts it over the top for me.

SMB3. I never got to experience SMW as a kid (I was a Genesis kid), and while SMW is an impressive game, nothing comes close to the variety and the creativeness that SMB3 had to offer. This was the game that I grew up with, this is the reason why I own a GBA...JUST to play THAT game. Oh yeah, also that.

I liked World more as a kid, but I can play 3 numerous times as an adult and still have a blast, which I can't say the same for with World.

It's very close, but World was better.

I'm torn on this, but I'll go with SMW seeing as though I played it first (first console was an SNES, played SMB3 through All Stars later). Neither are my favorite Mario platformer though, as I'd rank Yoshi's Island and the two Galaxies above it.

Honestly I think SMB3 is insanely overrated. SMW and it's not even close to me. I'd have a tougher time deciding between Sunshine and Galaxy 2.

SMB3 was to gaming what Nirvana was to music. It changed the way I played games. No longer did platformers seem to be linear START to FINISH quests but we had choices where we went and how we played the games. And while I think SMW was great ( and it was) It didnt improve the concept enough and even went backwards a bit. I like Yoshi, the colored shells with the different powers, the cape... but I was thinking Spacesuits, flamethrowers, lazer beams. While it's a great game that you dont need to make any excuses for liking it certainly didnt (pun) 1-up SMB3

Yeah, Sunshine is good, and in replaying it recently I did enjoy it, but the Galaxy games - especially the second one - blow it away. Although I'd like to see another game in the 64 / Sunshine vein. Galaxy and Galaxy 2 are a lot more linear and 3D Land isn't even comparable.

I've tried SMW several times, and everytime I get the cape, I manage to unfold it...and end up crashing face first into the ground, no matter what buttons I hit.
In SMB3, I just run with the raccoon/Tanooki suit...pressed A a bunch of times...and I'm flying. Easy, simple to use. For me, SMB3 is the far superior title.

I love both games equally. I really could never choose one over the other. I just have so many fond memories of playing both games as a kid. I will say that I find SMW to be easier. Not that SM3 is hard by any means, but I can run through World with a lot less trouble. That doesn't mean it's better or worse, but I find myself wanting to play it more often because I know it's not going to give me any trouble.

SMB3 is my pick for the greatest game of all time, so I'm going to go with that. Playing that game was like when Dorothy opened the door and you saw the color of Oz compared with the sepia-tone of Kansas.
