It seems every major feud these days involves both guys cutting a promo on how much they respect each other. Why? It's bland, and boring, and just completely destroys any emotional investment in the angle that I possibly could have had.

I think promos about respect can work, but its too abstract of a concept for anyone to really care.
It needs to be tied to something more tangible or real to that person.
Also - everyone always yells about how they want more respect, but rarely do they ever expand on why respect is so important to them as individuals.

What I don't get about the Sting/Angle lovefest is the fact that they HATED each other. The Mafia showed that they can try to put differences aside but ultimately they can't stand each other. Plus there was the whole 'Kurt stalking Sting's family' thing.

I cant stand heel vs heel and MOST of the time face vs face blows too. Wrestling psychology works best when its heel vs face. It doesnt always have to be a blood fued, but for gods sake how can you care about two guys that really really like eachother.
The only way face vs face gets people amped is situations like Goldberg vs DDP back in the day where both guys were insanley over and the new fan favorite was trying to take the belt from the current one.

I actually don't mind a lot of matches being about respect. It makes it a little more realistic actually.
If you look at things from the perspective that wrestling is supposed to be a sport, it makes sense that people who respect each other will sometimes end up facing one another for title belts, or even just in regular one on one matches.
When it comes to the title, the best wrestlers that win matches should be the ones getting title shots. I always found it odd that simply hating the champion was enough to get you a title shot. It wouldn't be enough in a real sport. Also, if blood feuds were used less frequently, they would have more of an emotional impact.
However, in this particular instance it doesn't make sense. These two have always feuded. Even when they were part of the same stable, they battled over leadership. This particular feud should be about two guys who have always been at odds finally settling the score. You don't even have to turn one of them heel. With their history, this is a rare time a face vs face feud where they hate each other could actually work.

I may not like this thread, but I respect it. But at the end of the day, when it's all said and done, I'm probably gonna post in it.

Probably because it's a cheap way to try and get the wrestlers over without doing much work.

^^ this
I hate this build-up, reminds me a lot of HHH/Taker at WM this year...terrible plodding bland stuff
also, always talking about your PAST (WWE or WCW in Sting's/Angle's cases) isn't shining a bright light on TNA itself, is it?

There has been way too much of this in TNA lately. AJ and Devon hugging after their screwy little match, AJ vs. Daniels from last months snoozefest main event that was built around being a sweet match more than any kind of issue, RVD vs. Crimson was thrown together with a little dash of "brother, I respect you, but I only know ONE WAY to get it done, and come Sunday, you're gonna find out" flavor, and now of course Angle and Sting kissing each other's asses. It's about the least creative way to go to build up a match.
I love how Mick Foley completely avoided this trope when he and Sting had their feud, and it was a hell of a lot more interesting for it.

What happened to people wanting things to be more "realistic" in wrestling? Most guys in other combat sports don't have blood hatred for one another. It's a competition.
Also, something about wanting more HATE in the feuds just seems....odd to me. Especially when EVERYONE knows that they don't all hate each other.

My problem is this is the Angle and Sting represent something that is the complete opposite. Angle is the no non-sense mat wrester while Sting is the quintessential star pro wrestler with a outlandish character. I would buy it more if it would be Angle and Bret Hart or Sting and Taker. But Angle and Sting just doesn't fit. Angle talk about respect and nobody buys it that he respect Sting.

A respect in every promo keeps the main event mafia away
