Does anyone know? I would HOPE they were going to book him as a "never give up, hardnosed, old school" champ.
It seemed like they were going to book Nash vs Benoit for SuperBrawl, and I doubt Nash would've put over Benoit.

He was gonna eventually lose the belt to Chavo Guerrero who would be the youngest champion in history. He would celebrate with his Misfits in Action stable members until General Rection gave Sgt. AWOL the "thumbs down" and they'd leave Chavo laying. Triple Star General Rection would beat Chavo at the very next PPV for the belt.

Considering the way WCW was at the time he probably would have lost it the next night anyway.

I'm guessing the big plan was to get him to sign a new contract.

Whatever it was, Mike Graham didn't seem to be friendly around the guy:
Warning strong language

I'm guessing the big plan was to get him to sign a new contract. I remember hearing it was. It was a last-ditch effort to keep him around that ended up not working. Knowing how bass-ackwards WCW was, he likely would've lost it to someone like Nash at the next show.

With Kevin Sullivan at the helm? Who the f*** knows.
As far as what Mike Graham said:

With Kevin Sullivan at the helm? Who the f*** knows. This, though you could certainly say the same with Russo. WCW in 2000 was the definition of throwing crap against the wall and seeing what stuck.

There was no plan. Sullivan threw the belt at him to get him to stay. He was gone 24 hours later.
Knowing Sullivan, he probably would have jobbed Benoit out to The Artist Formerly Known as Prince Iaukea in the Cruiserweight Title Tournament.

Suposedly Benoit was told that because of the Souled Out result, he would forfeit the belt and face Sid and someone else in a triple threat match for the vacant title, and he would get the win.
That was the plan, but Benoit just put the belt on the desk and said he was done.

Whatever it was, Mike Graham didn't seem to be friendly around the guy: Warning strong language Mike...........you are so far up your own ass it isnt even funny. When those four guys left for WWE, it was a death nail for you. It got so bad that they brought back not only Russo, but they brought back Bischoff so as far as you saying it was the best decision you ever made because none of them drew a dime. Wrestlemania 20 says that you are a f***ing moron. Also, you said you would cut Benoit's head off so yes, you did threaten is life. When you describe how you would kill someone, you are threatening their life. So as far as I am concerned, you handled that situation so poorly and congratulations to you for helping WCW die.

Graham comes off as kind of a jerk in this interview (and several others from various sources), but knowing what we know now about Benoit, it kind of puts all of this into perspective. Back then, people wore rose-colored glasses when it came to "the midgets" because they were great workers. And of course WCW was a sinking ship at this point, having mis-used Chris, Eddie and many, many others who weren't necessarily among the "Radicalz" for years. Bret Hart was the main cog in the hottest story in the business when they got him and they made him look like a nitwit almost right from the start.
As to what they'd have done with Chris from there on out, who knows. I don't think he was good enough all-around to have been somebody to anoint as the "main guy" (even WWE didn't want to do that when he was champion, as his big reign on Raw wasn't quite what many folks hoped). But there'd no doubt in my mind that he would've been booked to look like a chump before long, because that's what WCW did to almost anybody that could've been a positive contributer, or, heck, maybe even somebody who could catch on to some degree with fans who might possibly spend a dollar or two to see or support them!

Since WCW was the "land of dinosaurs," he was going to face a fellow T-Rex.

They did tease a possible program against Nash/nWo 2000 in a follow-up promo, but they never had a plan because as mentioned earlier, they were just trying to get him to stay with the company at that point and their entire PPV and all their angles going into the show were ruined by Bret and Jarrett's injuries.

Wrestlemania 20 says that you are a f***ing moron. Not only that, but a few weeks after Benoit, Eddie, Dean, and Perry arrived in the WWE, they were a part of a Main Event 10 man tag team match that OBLITERATED whatever WCW was airing in that time slot. So, not only was the departure of those guys the death knell of WCW because they loss their heart and soul. But, the numbers from that Raw proved that they could draw. So, the decision makers in WCW look like even bigger assholes.

he would've dropped the belt to Kevin Nash, according to Sullivan
personally, I think he'd lose the belt to Jarrett eventually (maybe after feuds with Sid and Nash, putting Benoit over as a giant killer / no nonsense asskicking machine)
but who knows with WCW 2000? everything was booked on da fly, baybe

OK, so let me get this straight:
They gave Benoit the title with his contract running out. Didn't Benoit and the rest of the Radicalz ask for their release the next night?
What I'm asking is, did WCW really release their World Champion?
