I think it may go down as my favorite Simpsons episode ever. I've re-watched it 5 times and it time it gets better and better. Jeremy Irons is amazing. That may be the most interesting side story in the Simpsons history.

Seriously? I mean, I'm glad you liked it. Maybe that's proof that the writers do still have a clue as to what they're doing.
Personally, it felt like I was watching it due to a sense of obligation--kind of like, "Yeah, I've seen every other episode, so I'll watch this one, even if it's the story of Moe's bar rag. But it's not something I'm going to enjoy doing."

I thought it sucked.
I usually don't like it when the Simpsons are "playing" other people in other time periods or stories or whatever, unless it's Treehouse Of Horror.

Best ever? In a world where "Homer The Heretic", "Last Exit to Springfield" and "Grade School Confidential" exist, choose your words carefully.

Maybe I was just super tired, but I thought it was probably in the top 5 worst ever. I'd rank it 3rd worst.

Now I'm not putting it up there with main stories, I consider this a side story episode. I really thought more people would like it, I love back stories.

Well, if there's one thing I'm glad about this episode, it's that they didn't make the damn cloth to be actually alive and interact with the characters. But yeah, I did like Jeremy Irons' voice work.
Also, I'm pretty certain that no one cared about the side story where Milhouse and Bart's friendship was on the rocks. Just plain forgettable and predictable.

I'm in Hell, I'm in Hell, I'm in Hell...
Truer words were never spoken about that episode. Since I post on the "Ancient Society of No Homers", here was my review:
Irons did a good job narrating the horrible things that the rag had gone through with elegant prose, but the whole idea of a talking rag alone makes little sense, especially for a prime-time show (then again, Family Guy is about mocking religion and American Dad can't go an entire show without a blood-and-gore spectacle, so you really can't win on Sunday nights). Also, the B-story makes no sense, other than an excuse for Milhouse to finally tire of the abuse he recieves from Bart.
Coupled with very lazy writing ("Is there anything I can do, besides changing in any way, to make you forgive me?") and really crude jokes (Depression Era Homer using a foot corn to season soup), it's pretty obvious the show is completely out of ideas. And bear in mind that we haven't even gotten to "Bart Does a Totally Awesome Thing That He Will Never Do Again".
Also, with the paycuts, everyone will most likely be working on half speed, and if this is what we get from them with full intent... I am not looking forward to whatever comes our way.
