I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's "it" seems weird and scary to me.
It's funny how true that really is, besides a few Metal bands they may have caught my eye that may have formed in the past 10 years I listen to almost nothing from the 21st century. Other than bands that I had already know that may have put something out since 2000.
For some reason it feels like it's not even my fault, like, what are the outlits these days for new music? Back in my day, to coin a phrase, there was MTV now where do I go?

Where are the outlets for new music? You're on it! The internet is a seriously great outlet for music lovers, in today's music scene you can find literally anything to suit your style. Some people like to surf CDBaby to find bands not on major record labels, and there are various other websites where you can find new music. Even YouTube, there's been times I've found cool, modern bands just by linking through the suggested videos. In my example, I was watching a couple of Hair Metal videos, I linked through 4 or 5 videos until I found a modern band. From there it kept linking me to more modern Hair bands, some of which I really dig, Reckless Love for instance. MTV has nothing on the internet, music availability like right now has never been seen before, it just takes some looking. You do have to put in some time, but it's worth it when you find some cool stuff that you like. If you put in the time, you WILL find something you like

The last thing I bought was due to hearing a song totally randomly on an unrelated YouTube video.

I'm quite pleased this hasn't happened to me. Becuase I'm in music journalism I voraciously consume new music from new bands and heritage bands and do my best to find the good stuff even in shitty scenes - dubstep, I am looking at you - and it means I get a lot more enjoyment out of modern stuff and a lot less crotchety old man attitude to it.
It also means that I don't just cling onto bands I used to like as a kid as my favourites and the ones that really endure - Pink Floyd, Glassjaw, Hundred Reasons, Notorious BIG, Reuben - are the ones that really do mean something to me.

This did happen to me, but a few years ago I started discovering newer bands I dug.
I still don't think kids would consider me "with it" though. But that's okay. I'm 30, I don't expect teenagers to think I'm cool.

I was never with 'it' in the first place, nothing's really changed.

Yeah same, in fact if some 15 year old thought I was cool I would most likely think they are weird, ha. I thought you were going to say you became the Greatest American Hero. This has always been true.

I like alot of older stuff but I also like alot of newer stuff as well so it's a fair balance between the two for me.

The rest is from older artists that still make music. It really sucks when I have conversations about music because I dislike almost everything that is popular today.

Boy, starting this thread has been kind of cathartic. I had forgotten I had a Pandora Radio account, and it's like such an obvious place to hear new stuff. Plug in a few bands you like, and they play similar stuff, good to go. Although it's still quite unlikely I'll be with "it" as I don't think Metal in general is "it" tho it'll always have fans.

I'm one of the few around here who isn't a metal fan.
Personally, I've stopped stressing out over what I listen to. It's not popular enough to be mainstream, nor is it... ...Pitchfork... ...enough to have hipster cred, but that's fine with me.

Even if you just prefer older bands, thats not neccesarily a bad thing either, as there are likely several lesser known bands in genres who never made it big, but are waiting to be rediscovered. Like grunge? Then check out the likes of greta and dandelion, just for one example.

Like grunge? Then check out the likes of greta and dandelion, just for one example. It's odd. I tried to listen to Failure (one of the 'forgotten' bands of the grunge days), and ended up liking all of Ken Andrews' side projects (On, Year of the Rabbit, and his solo album) better.
