On January 24th, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the movies that'll best competing for the award for Best Picture. Starting this year, The final nominees can now range from anywhere between 5 and 10.
So what do you guys think will be the final list of nominees this year? I predict:
The Artist The Descendants (which will win) The Help Hugo The Ides of March Midnight in Paris Moneyball War Horse

I voted for a full 10 nominees. I don't know what will win, though.
50/50 The Artist Drive The Help Midnight in Paris Moneyball The Tree of Life Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy War Horse Other(Rango)
However, if I had to select just 5, it would probably be The Artist, The Help, Moneyball, Midnight in Paris, and War Horse.
In fact, I'll even go as far as to say those are my predictions for locks. I think we will see those 5 as for sure nominees.

My full ten:
50/50 Drive Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close The Descendants The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo The Help The Ides Of March (my pick to win if nominated, but just barely. There's a LOT of good movies this year) The Muppets Moneyball We Bought A Zoo ("other")

So disappointed in the films of 2011, particularly the Oscar films. 2010 had so many great movies come out like Toy Story 3D, Inception, The Town, The Social Network, 127 Hours, Black Swan, The Fighter, True Grit, and I Love You Phillip Morris. I think the only one that let me down was Shutter Island.
Even the sillier comedy/action movies of 2010 were great: The Crazies, Hot Tub Tim Machine, Kick-Ass, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Get Him to the Greek, Salt, and Paranormal Activity 2. The only misses I recall seeing were Youth in Revolt, Iron Man 2, Dinner for Schmucks, and Jackass 3D.
The only movies from 2011 I can honestly recommend seeing are Your Highness, Bridesmaids, X-Men: First Class, Horrible Bosses, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and 30 Minutes or Less. And let's face it, none of those are exactly Oscar contenders.
No Strings Attached, Scream 4, Fast Five, Super 8, Love, Moneyball, and Paranormal Activity 3 all sucked and nothing else released in 2011 interested me in the least (beside 50/50, The Muppets, and A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas; all three of which I unfortunately missed). Disappointing year in film for sure.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy deserves a lot of nominations but it's been pretty much snubbed at the Golden Globes. If Gary Oldman doesn't finally get an Oscar nomination for his performance, it will be one of the biggest snubs ever IMO.

Wasn't interested at all in movies this year, so I'm just gonna list all the ones I know and think will be nominated:
The Artist - I'd be surprised if this doesn't win 'Best Picture' Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - Last film in a widely successful franchise, I expect tons of nominations and wins as more of a "Thank you, we're sorry for ignoring you" statement. Like 'LOTR: Return of the King' Hugo - The 'left-field' nominee The Ides of March/The Descendants - Its got George Clooney Moneyball - Its got Brad Pitt
The fan in me wants The Muppets, but I doubt that'll be nominated for anything besides Best Song and maybe Best Screenplay. What a horrible year for movies, especially compared to last year

I love the thought that Jim Rash (Dean Pelton in 'Community) has a great chance of being nominated for an Oscar.
He was a co-writer on 'The Descendants' (Best Adapted Screenplay).

I'll be honest, I want it to go back to 5 nominations.
I know that seems like so few given the field, but 10 is just too damn many. Over the last couple years, there's been a few movies I wouldn't even consider worthy of being nominated...and it sort of waters it down.

War Horse The Help: Which unfortunately will win Descendants Tinker Tailor Moneyball Hugo Ides of March The Artist Marylin And Dragon Tattoo for the mass america token entry
Haven't seen Ides, Moneyball, Marylin, Hugo, or the Artist but otherwise it has been a terrible year for Good Movies.

I have yet to see the Artist (I do want to so damn badly), but from the reception it's gotten I'm guessing we're in for a two-movie race between it and Moneyball.

Well the first question I'd ask is if there were any 16th century period pieces put out this year with reputable actors...
If not, I'd bank on The Help. Not because I liked it, but because it just seemed like one of those movies that'd win this kind of award.

My predictions: The Artist The Descendants The Help (what's with the hate? well, I liked it...quite a bit too) Hugo Midnight in Paris Moneyball War Horse ...so 7 noms, I suppose. Saw the first three and enjoyed them all. Was "meh" on Moneyball. Didn't see the others but want to (may watch Midnight in Paris this week though). I have yet to see the Artist (I do want to so damn badly), but from the reception it's gotten I'm guessing we're in for a two-movie race between it and Moneyball. It's more between it and The Descendants.

I like Moneyball but I highly doubt it is going to come even close to winning. Moneyball was sort of like this years The Social Network and I even though I liked it I couldn't believe people actually thought The Social Network was going to win. I think The Artist has it in the bag. The only thing that may beat it that has a chance is The Descendants. Just my guesses.

How can that be? That is one of the best documentaries I have seen in my life and it didn't even make the short list. BS! Well I guess it did not qualify because it did not feature a boring narration by a Hollywood actor on his lunch break during the filming of his latest "smart action" flick. EDIT: You know I bet it's some stupid rule that it's not going to get nominated. Probably because the documentary is entirely made up of archive footage, Nothing was filmed for this movie. Yes I bet that's it.
