I don't know whether it's cool or terrifying that Arkham Asylum actually exists in the real world.

Read that this morning.
Who would have thought that Silent Hill was a real place?
And that place is a place that I will never go to. Never.

I've done some research about Centralia over the years. I think there are still like 9 people living in it. They refuse to leave believing that the mine fire is some kind of elaborate state government conspiracy to steal the towns mineral rights or something like that.

That's exactly what they did. When I was working at the paper, I actually went to one of the places they based one of the buildings on, and the people they based one of the characters on.

Unfortunetaly I think they finally tore it down a few years ago. That being said several movies have filmed footage in it, and I also think there was an episode of Ghosthunters done in it too, so you can still get some idea of what it was like from them.

How do they explain the smoke and the fact that the ground opens up every once in a while?

How do they explain the smoke and the fact that the ground opens up every once in a while? Oh, they believe the mine fire is real, but they also believe that the technology exists to extinguish it and that the Pennsylvania state government refuses to do so because they don't own the mineral rights. It's all very complicated and stupid.

Just a quick correction on my previous post in case anybody was interested. Apparently they didn't film a Ghost Hunters in the Danvers State Hospital. I got it confused with the similarly creepy Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, KY, an abandoned tuberculosis hospital from the same time period.
However I was right when I said that Danvers has since been torn down. I was also right about movies being shot in it, namely a horror movie called Session 9.

I've read about Centralia before. Bill Bryson visited it in one of his books. Sounds like an interesting place, I'd love to visit it to be honest.

I actually live relatively close to Centralia. My friend went up there a few months ago. I would have joined him, but I had to work that night. I plan on making the trek up there eventually.
