Just about anything looks awesome on blu-ray. I'm watching The Help tonight on Blu-ray and see it being just as awesome visually and sonically as Dark Knight Returns. Although super hero and pixar movies get the edge because of special effects.

Keep in mind, though, that Criterion Collection releases are region A locked, and I noticed that your location is England, meaning that unless you have a region-free player(such as a PS3), you won't be able to play them. To add to this post, if you're in England, I strongly recommend Masters of Cinema. They're basically the British equivalent of Criterion, with comparable quality releases.

Just about anything looks awesome on blu-ray. Damn right. The worst blu-ray transfer is still an improvement over the best DVD transfer.

Just about anything looks awesome on blu-ray. Damn right. The worst blu-ray transfer is still an improvement over the best DVD transfer. This is not always true. The 2000 Anchor Bay DVD for Evil Dead II is better than Anchor Bay's 2007 Blu Ray of it. The quality of a Blu Ray transfer is highly, highly variable.

I've also seen a few things where you can't tell the difference. It just looks like a dvd.

early 2012 looks to have a few good titles coming as well, with some Hitchcock and Woody Allen, "To Kill A Mockingbird", plus Criterion's release of Gojira, just to name a few January releases.
A release date for Lawrence of Arabia has been confirmed for Europe in 2012, so I can only assume a North American release will come soon. This has been the proverbial "white whale" of blu-ray enthusiasts, as it's been hyped by Sony since the initial launch of the format...back in 2006. Sony has been taking their time with the remastering job, and it's possible that this may be the best looking catalog title on the format, which is saying something considering the releases by distributors such as MOC, Criterion, and the studios(WB, Sony, etc)

Transformers: The Movie looks and sounds fantastic.
Band of Brothers and The Pacific are essential BR purchases.
Pretty much any of the Asian epic war movies. Asian cinema in general lends itself very well to HD format.

That's the exception not the rule. I will note this: anything animated will look absolutely stunning, especially PIXAR.

I have these:
The Wrestler Natural Born Killers Citizen Kane American Psycho Nine Inch Nails: Beside You In Time Jeff Beck: Live at Ronnie Scott's
Of those, I can definitely say that the most impressive looking is the NIN Blu-Ray, but as a movie, that Citizen Kane is masterful looking on the format, as is the newer Natural Born Killers BluRay.
I want to get Taxi Driver, as I hear it's one of the best Bluray remasters, thus far. I'd also love to see 2001: A Space Odyssey, Children Of Men, Clockwork Orange, and Hugo (when it comes out on video) on the format.

First Blu Ray film i watched on my HD TV was The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I was surprised at how good it looked.

The Dark Knight and Inception both look amazing on Blu-Ray. Keeping the IMAX aspect ratio in the action scenes makes a world of difference.

Transformers: The Movie looks and sounds fantastic. It's interesting you say that one, as the UK release, now deleted, is one of the few Blu Rays that I've seen (joining the Predator films and Gladiator) as being slated by review sites for quality of transfer and such

The UK Metrodome releases in DVD and BR formats are all pretty flawed, though I have seen as many positive reviews as negative. Personally I think the transfer looks pretty good, as I'm not going over it with a magnifying glass. I would like to see something better than a budget remaster though - proper colour correction, cel layer stack fixes, 5.1 mix from the original master tapes.

Don't forget the Back to the Future box set.
And it might just be because it was one of the first few Blus that I got, but for some reason, I was kind of blown away by the Grumpy/ier Old Men set I got on the cheap at Best Buy.

Glad to hear about Lawrence of Arabia. That was always my pick in the 'Which film are you most looking forward to on Blu-ray?' threads.
Got the Alien Quadrilogy at xmas. Loving it as was to be expected. Though when I'm demonstrating Blu-ray I always pick up Avatar. Pixar movies also look incredible on the format.
For a choice that not so many others will give, I'll mention 'Moon'. It's no action movie but the Director Duncan Jones has said he likes to think it's set in the same universe as the Alien movies (the sets were designed by the guy who did the sets on Alien). It looks great on Blu-ray.
