I was thinking about this yesterday when I was trying to sleep. It seems like heroes are a dime a dozen just about if you talk about the past. Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Maximilian Kolbe, etc. But if you try to think of current ones it gets a bit harder.
So who would you say is a current living hero in the world. Just two rules for this:
1. They have to be living.
2. They have to be well known. That doesn't mean your mom, grandfather, next door neighbord, etc. isn't a hero, but I just thought it would make the conversation more interesting if we had examples everyone (or most people) knew.
The first person that jumped into my head was Barack Obama (which I won't go into for political reasons). However, after thinking it over more the name I have settled on thus far that stood out the most is Eric Schlosser. For those who don't know him he is the author of "Fast Food Nation" and an investigative journalist.
So what say you?

The main ones coming to my mind right now are Capt. Sully Sullenberger (Miracle on the Hudson) and the SEAL Team Six as a whole.

Hero worship is a dangerous thing. We're so rarely aware of heroes while they are living. I've often looked at it like, true heroes go unnoticed.

I think it's safe to say Obama. Not because of anything political, but being the first black president is kind of a big deal. It's a milestone for African Americans and America as a whole.

First name which popped into my mind was Victoria Cross recipient Johnson Beharry.
His Warrior APC got ambushed and he had to drive it out with the hatch open and his head sticking out all the time whilst under fire. Then, a few months later he did pretty much the same thing again, this time after having an RPG hit six inches away from his head and having injuries from the shrapnel.
Also, Matt Croucher who jumped onto a hand grenade in Afghanistan to save the lives of his patrol. He survived and got awarded the George Cross.
Don't know if they're both well known in the US or not but they're fairly well known here in the UK.

My opinion is Ron Paul and I respect the board`s rules on not getting into any political talk of why.

The funny thing is that with what he does for the Make a Wish Foundation, it's arguably true.

I have bad news for you, friend. I'll say Sully. I would not say any current living politician because I don't think anyone's earned it yet. Leave it at that because I don't want to derail, but there's no currently living president, senator, governer, whatever that should be in the pantheon with guys like Lincoln and Washington.

Rick Hansen. Wheelchair athlete who went around the world to raise money for research in repairing spinal cord damage. And by "around the world", I mean across four continents, through 34 countries, under his own power. EDIT: you know that song "Man in Motion" from the movie "St. Elmo's Fire"? That's about Rick Hansen.
