Or Final Fantasy IV in Japan. I started playing it yesterday and couldn't stop. I'm around 6.5 hours into the game already. I had heard that the difficulty was toned down for America and they really weren't kidding. I've died once so far...on purpose.
I enjoy the story and the characters a lot, but the actual game mechanics are a bit annoying since it's not quite as developed as the later games. For instance, when shopping, the game doesn't tell you if you already own an item, you have to go into your inventory to check. Also, it seems like half the townspeople are total spaz's and get in your way a lot. It's also a bit annoying how magic attacks can take several turns to finally execute. Nothing quite as frustrating as having someone die before they can cure the whole party, even though you commanded them to do it 3 turns ago. Minor inconveniences, but nothing major.
What do you guys think of this game? Where does it rank among the rest of the series? At this point I can say that I enjoy it, but it's far from the best in the series.

I played the Japanese version of the game, and I came across about 7 spots where I had to grind XP for about 3 hours just to progress.
I stopped about halfway through the game. Seriously, you go from a fairly normal fight to getting oneshotted by everything almost every time you enter a new area.
Great story and music, it's just the difficulty is amazing. I shouldn't say difficulty, because it's not hard to grind XP for hours just to progress. Tedious is more like it. And I'm an MMO player saying this.

Got so many great memories of watching my brothers play this game back when I was in middle school. I recently watched an entire playthrough of the game on youtube. I'm just waiting for the real life opportunity to call someone a "spoony bard."

The difficulty is just in the Japanese version and the future rereleases of the game isn't it? I've only come across a couple of areas where the fights were kind of tough, but that wasn't really because of the enemies. Once it was because I ran out of MP and Ethers and all the enemies had to be defeated with magic, and the other time was in the dark elf cave where you have to remove all of your metal equipment. I just ran from fights in that area lol.
