We're kind of getting tired of having to cheer for the teams in Texas, Colorado, and Missouri in the other leagues because those are the closest options to us. Try living in Nebraska. We have no professional sports teams here. All we have is college football.

Myth: The San Jose Sharks are another baffling entrant into a non-hockey market that could be better served in another hockey-friendly city.
Fact: Ask many people around the Bay Area, and they will say, "I don't follow hockey (though those same fans often do express that they wish the Sharks success)." But for those who do, the Sharks have some of the most loyal fans in the NHL. They have sold out nearly every home game since their inception, and generally the only way to get tickets is through either StubHub or a scalper.

Boston (specifically Red Sox fans)
Myth: We all believed in the Curse and spwent years in a state of "woe is me". We also blame Buckner for losing the 86 world series
Fact: 80% Of Sox fans understand that ownership absoulutely sucked for the better part of that drought. We had the Yawkeys, who due to racism, didnt really employ any players of color. We understood that the Red Sox for the most part, lacked the talent to win a World Series.
As for the 86' series: Buckner was easily one of the MVPs for the team that year. But due to injuries, had N-O business out there at the end of game 6. And guess what? even if he fields that ball clean, I'm not 100% sure he beats Mookie to the bag. Not to mention the relief pitching puking all over itself. And the part where they lost game 7, blowing a lead there, too.
These misconceptions were championed by Boston baseball writer (and I use that term loosely) Dan Shaugnessy, ESPN and Fox, who epsecially in the early 2000's couldnt resist showing the Buckner play 96,285 times.

We here in Philadelphia often get a deserved bad rap for some of our more churlish antics, but we're also incredibly loyal and knowledgeable. Since we don't have many World Titles to our fair city's name, we have latched onto effort as our mark of success. A guy who busts his ass for a Philadelphia team will be honored forever, even if he leaves us. Tell that to this guy.

I'm tired of people saying that we lost the Sonics because they sucked. We lost them because they wanted a ridiculous amount of money despite not performing well. The state was more than willing to keep them otherwise.

I'm tired of people saying that we lost the Sonics because they sucked. We lost them because they wanted a ridiculous amount of money despite not performing well. The state was more than willing to keep them otherwise. Yeah, exactly. The city(the citizens) wanted to keep the Sonics so badly. The City(ie: the Mayor, City Counsel, etc) wanted to, as well, but weren't exactly willing to buy a new arena for a lackluster team(Safeco was a newer back then, and C-Link/Qwest had just been taken out of its wrapper, pretty much). I miss the Sonics a lot, but I can imagine the city of Seattle not wanting to be paying off three state-of-the-art sports complexes at the same time, especially when at any given time two or three of those teams were cellar-dwellers. Plus, in addition to that, the new ownership group had plans to move the team from day 1, and were willing to dump the city of Seattle at the slightest hint of things not going exactly how they wanted them to. They easily could have stuck around in Seattle and played in Key Arena for a year or two while the city launched a "Refuse to Lose Pt. II" campaign for the Sonics, but ownership obviously didn't care about fan loyalty or shit like that.

Leafs fans aren't all idiots. Most all level-headed and realistic, but it's the mouthbreathers who are the loudest and the reason why the fan base gets a bad rap. Truthfully, every other fan base has just as many idiot fans as the Leafs do.
I also enjoy the typical "The Jays/Raptors have fans?" creative remark from visiting fans at games. Yes, actually, both teams have very strong fan bases.

75% of the old trafford crowd comes from london (someone had to say it.) That's stupid because most of the Man Utd fans I know down here (and I know loads of them) don't go to Man U games often or at all in some cases. I still struggle to see why they would want to support a team so far away but their choice.

Related to the above:
"There are no United fans in Manchester"
One time I went to Manchester with a mate and we actually played a game of "spot the shirt" to kill time (we were there for a gig), we tallied up all the football shirts people were wearing and United shirts outscored City shirts.

The Sharks are often touted as one of the huge successes of the most recent expansion era. The Preds are also a big success.

The state was more than willing to keep them otherwise. Arguably the biggest reason the Sonics left Seattle is because the people in power in Seattle agreed to settle with Clay Bennett & the NBA just hours before the verdict on the court case on whether it was legal for Bennett to move the team before the lease the team had at the time was up. There was nearly a 100% chance the verdict would've been that it would be illegal and that the Sonics would still be in Seattle for at least a few more years. Of course it didn't help that no matter who owned the Sonics, they would be bleeding money because of the Key Arena. They really did need a new arena to play in if they realistically wanted the Sonics to stay in town.

Living in Montreal I can say that there are two sets of fans who get a bad rap: Boston and Toronto. Leaf fans are often accused of being delusional nitwits who think they're so great and don't realise how crappy their team is since they haven't won anything since 67. They "plan parades" the moment they have a winning streak. Bruins fans are accused of being meathead cretins who know nothing about hockey and only believe goonery is the way to go. They're also bandwagon fans. Edit: I can't wait to hear what people say about us. I know arrogance is probably there somewhere. Habs fans always try to win an argument with "24 Cups"!! That's about their only bad quality I know of, way out here in Alberta. It is a fine accomplishment, but what have you done lately? Exactly. Bruins fans, total bandwagon fans. You should see all the people in their brand new Bruins gear who have appeared since June. Most people here are either Flames or Oilers fans and then just a sprinkling of everyone else, though Habs and Canucks are probably the next most popular.

I guess for LA, it'd be that we don't care about anything and are only there to be seen and not heard. That's only true for the front rows. The first seats at Staples or Dodger Stadium (not a Dodger fan by the way, but most everyone I know is) are so expensive that only celebrities and rich douchebags flaunting their wealth sit in the front and THEY are the people that are only there to be seen.
The people that really care about the team always sit up in the nosebleeds because they don't have the means to be able to get a good seat at a lower level where you could be heard.
Another one is that people in LA don't care about hockey at all. That's only partially true. Most people out here (that are originally from here) don't care, but then you get people like me who despite never playing hockey on a frozen surface ever love the sport more than any other sport out there. The Kings almost always sell out or come very close to selling out and as much as I hate them, the Ducks do have a very loyal (albeit smaller) fanbase that come out and see the team no matter what. Hell, the Kings were getting near sellouts most nights during the 06-07 and 07-08 seasons when they were absolutely atrocious. Not to mention all the transplants that bring their fandom out here.

Tampa sports fan perception: We don't care. That is absolutely, unequivocally 100% false. The Lightning sold out the entire season after the NHL lockout in support of the Stanley Cup Champions. They still have some of the better attendance figures in the league. By all accounts, very few teams can match the fan experience at a Lightning game. Too bad ESPN conveniently overlooks this. The Bucs' crowds suck now only because Tampa's economy is worse than average and ownership is terribly cheap. During the Tony Dungy era, there were tens of thousands of people on the season ticket waiting list. It jumped to 120,000 after the Super Bowl victory. There has always been a sizeable group of fans that reveres this team. Of course, everyone and their mother jumps on the "Rays have no fan support" bandwagon. Yes, I do agree the team's attendance is often underwhelming. But it's not necessarily due to lack of interest (though many baseball fans in the area cheer for rival teams). The stadium's location is atrocious and nobody in Tampa or farther east with a job can get to a 7:00 game before the first pitch. Add to that the fact that very few people like Tropicana Field and most wish it were gone. A new stadium is already working for the Marlins, and it can yield similar returns for the Rays. [End sales pitch] I came in here to post this, almost exactly. Tampa is a great sports city with lots of history, despite what most believe. High five, BPB! Hoping for a great season for the Rays, and a better season for the Bucs (assuming we're actually players in free agency deals this year)

Especially against teams like Montreal, Toronto, Detroit, NYR, Philadelphia, and Boston. Can someone confirm or deny this? I'm curious.

Same thing I hear with the Florida Panthers who have decent attendance numbers for a team that haven't been in the playoffs for like ten years, only made it three times in their entire existence, and having the arena in the middle of nowhere.
