Yay! Now we just need to drop the prices and everything will be hunky dory.

They'll never drop the prices. Even if the Australian dollar is stronger than the American, we'll still pay 30 dollars more for new releases and even games that came out almost a year ago.

How come they weren't allowed before?
I never really thought Australia was too conservative.

How come they weren't allowed before? I never really thought Australia was too conservative. You'll be surprised how conservative our politicians can be. Hell, Australian gamers have been trying for about six years but the South Australian attorney general Michael Atkinson has blocked it by virtue of being the only one that refused to even allow debate of the subject.

Seeing how 80% of big titles are M rated nowadays this is great.

If what I've read about it is accurate, all they are really doing is shoving what is currently MA15+ into the R18+ rating. Meaning that games that are currently rated MA15+ will instead be 18+, and games that are banned will stay banned.
I really don't see how that brings it out of the 'dark ages'.

How come they weren't allowed before? I never really thought Australia was too conservative. As someone who's been following this for awhile, here's what's happened. There was no equivalent to the American M or even AO rating in Australia. The closest they had was something similar to the T rating. Anything more extreme than that was "declassified," effectively banning the game from being sold in Australia. Gamers and the industry have been fighting for years for the R18+ rating (which would be the equivalent of the M rating), but in order to make any changes to the classification board, the Attorney General of each state had to agree to changing it. Everyone but South Australian AG Michael Atkinson agreed to introducing the rating. Thus Atkinson continually held it up until he was forced to resign a couple of years ago. His replacement was a lot more open-minded about the subject and here we are. I'm really happy for you Aussies.

How come they weren't allowed before? I never really thought Australia was too conservative. Honestly when it comes to politics there is very little difference between the words conservative and liberal. This is something people really need to learn. Remember that it was a very liberal Tippor Gore who started the PMRC and introduced the intrusive parental advisory sticker. I could go into the history on why there is very little difference between those words but there is a no politics rule and I may have already said too much related to the topic. All I will say is that people really really need to read actual history especially when it comes to those two words.

I hope that simply referring to the linguistics and background of political terms doesn't break the rules too much. I think when most people refer to 'liberal' and 'conservative' in these contexts, they're going back more to the philosophies than America's current experience. There's an odd situation in America where both phrases are used about the same ideology to differing extents, but it doesn't discount the actual roots of the terms for use in debate. There's no way someone could confuse John Stuart Mill's "On Liberty" with Edmund Burke's "Reflections On The Revolution In France" when it comes to ideology, as an example.

How come they weren't allowed before? I never really thought Australia was too conservative. Basically, from what I can gather, the Aussie government made the age ratings for video games back when they were still being treated as toys for children, and thus the highest rating they created for games at the time was 15+, essentially it would be like having an ESRB that ended at the T rating. And thus the problem of a LOT of M-rated games being unofficially banned in Aussieland. You see, they can't legally sell unrated games, and since there is no R18+ rating, any game that couldn't get the 15+ rating would be refused a rating certification if they didn't comply with cutting out/reducing the offending content to get the 15+ rating, thus making the game unrated, and thus not legal to be sold, thus effectively banning the game.
