I didn't know whether to cry, throw up, or pray for the end of days after I read this. WARNING: Not for the faint of heart - involves a father murdering his children. www.people.com/people/article/0,,20568893,00.html Seriously, gut wrenching.

I didn't know that he hatcheted them. Why kill the kids? Just kill yourself and be done with it.

F***. I can't take these kinds of f****** stories anymore. God dammit.
BTW, there's no doubt in my mind now that the sorry sack of white trash s*** killed his wife as well.

Think that's as bad as this story gets? Wrong. This guy's dad, whom they lived with, was arrested on child porn charges. It's a helluva world we're livin' in.

Seriously guys, I think we've broken a record for "most depressing news stories posted in off-topic" this year. And it's FEBRUARY.
I'm not sure I even wanna read this one.

I actually had to read the main post twice to make sure it wasn't me that posted it.

There should be a sub-forum for sad and depressing shit. I don't come to off-topic for this.

I'm surprised so many people are just hearing about this. This has been huge news in Washington for years, starting with his wife's "mysterious" disappearance. You can't go five minutes without hearing what happened to those kids. It's just sick, that dude was a real bastard.

I'm not even going to bother clicking the link. I hate to be this guy but a lot we are having way to many depressing disturbing threads here. It's basically the same comments on a different but same sad sick story. It really accomplishes nothing but to make us feel like shit but then feel better after wishing he/she death/prison rape.
For once I rather hear a positive story or positive news that is actually huge but isn't getting a lot of attention. Like how close we are in defeating HIV or how people get happier when they are older. Sorry but I'm rambling. It's late.

I've been bombarded with this story every time I check my phone or turn on the news or go on a news website. I come here to get some laughs. It's one thing if it's once in awhile but these type of stories have been really popping up more and more on this forum. There's a billion other places to find out and comment about the horrors of the world. I'd prefer this place to remain a light-hearted oasis from that.

To be fair, most of the thread titles clearly state how messed up the story is, so you could just not click on the thread.

I've only taken one anthropology course in my life, but somehow it's managed to shape my opinions of a whole lot of things over the years. (Even though all I remember from it is why people held feasts.) This is one of those times. I think sharing things within a community serves a purpose beyond venting... it reinforces to us that there are social mores that should never be violated, that there are certain things we all agree on, certain values we all hold. It should be obvious that not hatcheting and blowing up your small children is a value we all agree on, but when we hear about these kinds of things over and over, it can make you hate humanity and view everyone with suspicion. Bringing it back to people you share a feeling of community with and getting their feedback restores your faith in general humanity and lets you know that the famous villains you hear about are still aberrations. And the venting is therapeutic too, of course. How do you release your feelings of helpless rage over something like this? You can't save those kids now. You can't punish their father either. It happened, it's over, nothing can be done, and you're hearing about it when it's too late to do anything, because that is the nature of our highly interconnected society... we hear about things all the time that we can do nothing to fix because they're too far away, out of our jurisdictions, whatever. If we were still hunter gatherers, anything we heard about would be within walking distance and we could do something about it. Not so now, so how do we process our feelings about these stories? By talking. It's all we can do. ETA: For what it's worth, though, a Google search for good news led me here: www.happynews.com/
