f*** overtime-to me there's no place for it unless someone needs it and asks for it.

You've got to leave the minute you're scheduled to finish. I'm an absolute stickler for this.
I don't like working for companies for free.

Unless I need the money, I'm not even a fan of paid overtime.
I've got a life outside of work. This is just where I come to get paid, its not my whole life. I wish others here would realize that.

Yea, people are scared shitless anymore about not having money and they will let themselves get taken advantage of in order to "catch up"

And number 152 on the list of America's Out of Order Priorities....work/life balance!
I don't understand why we let ourselves get this way culturally.

When I was in media content management, overtime wasn't common...but when it was, it was enjoyable. Working on assets for the NCAA Tournament, the Discovery Channel, and lots of stuff for Augusta for the Masters? Sure...
For as much downtime as we had waiting on various aspects of projects, the OT was a small price to pay.

I have a friend that works at a camp in Northern Alberta. So next you think your job is bad, at least be glad you aren't in a position to not see a woman in months!

Other countries think we are crazy. I think they're right. And yet you hear some people talk about it and they say this generation is lazy and won't work for anything. Of course every generation says that about the previous one. Hell even back in ancient Greece you can find that

Yeah, it's pretty important not to work longer than you're supposed to. If you do, people get used to you accomplishing that quantity of work, and think you're slacking when you don't. I work exactly the hours I signed up to work, take exactly the lunch I'm supposed to take, and don't work from home beyond checking my email once when I get up (because of colleagues in different time zones). I still get a lot done, and what I don't get done today, people will just have to wait for. It's not the end of the world.

I don't mind overtime, as long as I'm not being driven crazy by it. Hell, I just want a job that pays a living wage at this point, but the market SUCKS. I've had the overtime in the past get out of hand, and while the checks are nice, that's not the point that gets me.
A few years back, I woun up working a 32 hour day twice in a two week period, each time calling and demanding they send someone, anyone, to relieve me after 16 hours (each time I had worked 12 hours the day before) and I was told "you don't have to stay, but don't expect to have a job if you leave, work until someone shows up".

My brother and I had a conversation concerning working hard to get a job done in a day (his boss believes in working constantly including overtime) Me: There's always tomorrow My brother:And if there isn't, who gives a shit?

I'm not a lawyer but it sounds like you could have had a very serious lawsuit in your hands.
