The premiere of The River (or as it should be called, "Found Footage: the Television Series") was tonight, and to be honest, it didn't suck. It was actually pretty good, IMO. Good use of atmosphere and setting. The supernatural aspect wasn't overdone like I thought it would be. The story didn't drag anything down like most horror endeavors. There is a LOT of foul language (bleeped, of course) in this show. You don't hear that much cussing on premium cable, let alone network TV. There were a LOT of F-bombs and S-bombs. Refreshing to hear that on a Big 4 network.
Plot synopsis and very mild spoilers below:
Overall, I say it's on the "good" side with a lot of potential. There's also potential to go completely off the deep end with craziness. Hope it doesn't go that route. Seeing as I actually like this, I fully expect it to be cancelled within 2 weeks.
Plot synopsis and very mild spoilers below:
{Spoiler}The plot follows a reality TV star that went missing along with his crew along this creepy, mindf***y river. The man's wife, son, son's obvious love interest, survival guide-type guy, & camera crew go looking for him. They find his ship and it's completely abandoned. Like a bunch of idiots, they gleefully stroll into a clearly dangerous situation (aka "White People in Horror Movies Syndrome"). Some demon is trapped on-board and, naturally, they release it. Fleeing, it takes a chunk out of the son's girlfriend's leg. Straight out of the John Cena School of Selling, she sells it for all of five minutes and never again. They are also accompanied by a Hispanic mechanic and his young daughter, who is apparently a vessel for the undead. Not even 2 full episodes in and she had been possessed twice by the end of them.
