In gym, we've been doing a unit on Volleyball. And thus far, I've not been doing very well. We just did the first day of a tournament in randomized teams, and it's like I'm not even part of the team. Nothing really comes toward me, and if anything does, I miss it. But there's teammates that cover for me, so it's just a matter of being ready.
However, I've been getting really irritated at my serve. Not once has it gone over the net, and nine times out of ten, it's out of bounds. Basically, it's an automatic point for the other team. I've been trying to work on it, but something seems off.
Any ideas? In case you need to know how I serve, it's underhand.

It's all about the pants, dude. You need to get the skin tight spandex ones that the gals wore in high school when I was in school. Trust me...this is the ONLY way!
Expect interested reactions.

Buy the refs so that they don't mind you kicking it.

Turn your wrist 45 degrees to the right and just keep a fluid motion and follow through.

When the meter goes in the red, press A. Then when it comes back down, try to press A again when it touches the line.

You should serve underhand to start. The easiest way to serve is to make sure you are not dropping the ball to make contact to it. What I mean by this is that you hold it in your left hand and swing with your right (obviously this is for a right handed person). You should move your left hand out of the way right as you are about to strike the ball with your right hand. If you have the ability to palm the ball in your left hand, you can do that and hold it on the side.
It is hard to explain easily, but this will help you serve very consistently. The nice thing about getting the basic underhand serve down is that you can do simple modifications to make the ball knuckle, which makes it an extremely good server. It also helps if you move to the middle to serve.

Hit the ball over the net.

Not exactly what I was looking for, but progress:
It was my turn to serve, and of course, me and my team thought it would be an automatic point. But the thing was, the other team thought so too.
So when I hit the ball, it hit the top of one of the poles, rolled over the net, and it was in bounds and legal. They couldn't get to it in time.
There was quite a loud cheer after that.

I'm the only Overhand (open-hand) server I've ever encountered. It's odd.
No, I couldn't hit it as hard overhand, but I always kept it in play. Anyone else I ever played against would strike with an underhand fist, meaning they'd usually send it high or too far.
Of course, being short meant I was useless when I had to play up at the net, though.
-Semi-related anecdote. Back in junior high, they actually split teams by gender once. It ended up a shutout with the entire male team sitting cross-legged on the floor except for the server.

To improve, you need a training montage.

20 years ago I had a really great overhand serve that'd go flying at the top of the net, and curve up and over it at the last minute. Can't explain it, can't reproduce it, but it was good.

I normally hit open handed overhand for my serve. I can spin it very well that way. I can get a very good angle on the serve too due to my height.

This is legitimately the only sport that I was absolute garbage at. I could serve pretty decently, but god damn I couldn't get a proper return to save my life.
However I'll always remember the day when a plucky group of middle school boys in a PE class beat the girl's volleyball team, whilst over-celebrating every single point. Douchey celebrating = wins.

The ball is not allowed to hit anything on the serve, net and all. You guys aren't playing by the rules and therefore, your serve shouldn't have counted. Sorry.

I always stuck with a sidearm serve. Rather than trying to put the ball way up in the air and over the net, I put it just barely over the top of the net. It led to a much faster serve than an underhand serve. It also gave me a lot more accuracy than people who served overhand. On my high school team, I was the only one who didn't use an overhand serve. I was also the only one with a serving accuracy over 90%. Because I could aim my serve accurately, I usually let it drop directly between two players on the other team. One of the big things about vollleyball at that level is that nobody wants to be the one to mess up, so most people will see a ball coming between them and another player and let it drop. That way they can pretend that the other person should have had it. Of course, the other person is doing exactly the same thing.
Back to the original question, the biggest thing is just to keep practising. That includes outside of gym class. And make sure you are connecting with the proper spot on your hand--the base of your hand, never the fingers.

The gym is harder. When I play outside, I serve underhand and hit the ball as high as I can in the air. It is very difficult to defend.
