OK..
Just got done watching this video:
Now I have never played Earthbound, making the closest I've ever played one of the games in this series playing as Ness or Lucas in the Smash Bros. games.
However, I wanted to get the opinions of people who have played Earthbound, or for that matter, Mother 1 or Mother 3, and see if these games are really great or if the reviewer in this video is overexaggurating it.

EarthBound is one of the weirdest RPGs you'll ever play. It is totally awesome and worthy of high praise
Mother 3 also deserves its share of high praise as well. It's far different when it comes to tone compared to EarthBound as it gets really dark and depressing at times.

Just as good. New Aged Retro Hippies. The cult that wants to simply paint everything blue. Ordering a pizza off the phone. The zombie paper. Calling mom to cure home sickness... Fuzzy. f***ing. Pickles.
This game is so endearing. The music, the cheesiness, the somberness, the fact that some s*** just doesn't make sense. The mind f*** of certain areas.
Hell even the combat system is cool, you can flat out avoid fights with anything you could kill in one hit anyways, just touch the enemy and you automatically get the XP and items.
I can go on forever about this title but I'll stop here, it's very dear to me.
EDIT:
Hell this review is hitting everything I could possibly have mentioned.

I have two copies of the game I love it that much. Do either of them have the strategy guide (I'm assuming yes, but still).

Great games, with a lot of heart. Giygas is a fantastic villain.
It also indirectly caused this.

I may have to play it just to figure out what the hell Fuzzy Pickles is all about. {Spoiler}At random times, a guy comes down to take your photo. He tells you to say 'Fuzzy Pickles' instead of 'Cheese' Great games, with a lot of heart. Giygas is a fantastic villain. I wanted to play this but it never got a UK release.
Also I would get an NTSC cart but those go for silly prices on places like Ebay

EarthBound is my favorite game ever. Cornfed already did a good job with what the game is about - there's a lot of funny stuff, a lot of weird stuff, and the story goes from normal to bizarre.
The lack of Mother and Mother 3 in the US makes me weep.

Pickles. You forgot the 3rd strongest moles, Moonside, fly honey, Mr. Saturn, salmon yogurt, Stonehenge and the Boogie Tent! I love Earthbound. Weird, wonderful, fantastic, utterly f***ed-up game. My poor strategy guide didn't survive, unfortunately. I have played a little bit of Mother in English. Please don't ask how I did it, I don't feel like getting banned today. I liked it, but for some reason I wasn't able to really get into it.

From what I heard in the video I posted in the OP, most fans of the series do think that Mother (Or Earthbound Zero as it's sometimes called) hasn't aged well.

Most of the games from the NES-era haven't aged too well. Too bad Nintendo has no interest in a properly remade version or in bringing Mother 3 over from Japan.

I've played Earthbound more than any other game in my life. I get it out every once in a while and go all the way through it.
I remember that advertising game with the terrible smelling scratch-and-sniff stickers. I rented it as soon as M&J video had it and I was hooked for life.

My current username/avatar/sig is from Mother 3 and my original username's from EarthBound. What do you think I'm going to say? Must-plays. You're right CMWaters (or rather, the video's right), the first game hasn't aged well and there are some really annoying places, but it's still worth looking at. The story and characters are still good and you get more backstory/characterization for Giygas.

Mother 3 lives up to its “strange, funny and heartrending” tag-line; it features laugh-out-loud dialogue and emotional gut-punches often within the same scene. Actually when looking for the exact wording on that tag-line I stumbled across forum topics discussing political ideals and socio-economics in relation to the game which prove it has some relatively mature themes.
Not much I can add about Earthbound but as you may be able to tell from the other responses there are so many great little moments (in both games) that add up to make something special.
