This topic might already be treading on thin ice in a few directions, but we'll see.
This came from the Benoit Sabbatical page; I honestly didn't know that Randy Orton had overdosed in 2006 since I read it in that topic, since I didn't get Orton's DVD nor had I paid much attention to same.
If that hadn't ended well enough to be kept under wraps until now... all I can think of is that it would've been BAD. Just, BAD for the WWE. Especially since Eddie has pretty much just happened, and Orton was just as high on the card in 2006 if not higher.
Everything Vince had professed about the drug problem being a thing of the past would be irrevocably out the window, and if Benoit still happened a year later, that could truly have been a death blow to the WWE, three high-profile superstars in three years, in progressively worse ways. I honestly don't think it would've been recoverable.
I still seriously didn't know about that until five minutes ago...

I doubt it would have been a death blow. Wrestling has survived worse and will always be around in some form.

Yea--to be completely crass about it--if a guy can murder his wife and child and kill himself and wrestling can still be around I don't think they'd have much to worry about.
Now--one thing a friend told me about--they heard this horrific rumor and called me in a panic (another friend was playing a practical joke on them)...this one's so awful I loathe to mention it.
But basically, he was told by one of our friends that Matt Hardy had broken out of rehab, gone to Amy Dumas (Lita) house and committed a murder-suicide. They were crying on the phone in a panic.
Once I calmed them down and told them this never happened, I thought about how actually horrific and devastating something like that would be. Just the thought of Trish Stratus or Adam Copeland having to make some sad memorial speech made me feel a little ill...

I didn't know he had OD'd either.
He was basically bad-HBK before he got his shit together it seems.
Glad he got it together before he became old-HBK.

Acute baby-oil intoxication is no laughing matter. Orton was lucky to pull through.

I guess what I meant in my original what-if, I didn't mean that losing Orton in itself would've been a death blow, I meant that if you had lost Eddie, then Orton, and THEN Benoit had happened anyway, the effects of Benoit would've been even worse than they were.
But I digress.

It does make you wonder, but the fact that the WWE pulled through what they did makes you wonder just what exactly would crush the company. It would have to be something insane like John Cena killing a guy backstage, or a match breaking into a shoot and one guy being killed in the ring.

All of that, plus Cena or HHH or someone pulling a Ron Artest complete with an all out fan melee.

Or John Cena and Triple H going at it with a group of fans and then someone about Evan Bournes size happens to be a boxer or something and beats the holy hell out of both of them, making them both look like jokes.

I would burst out laughing if this happened, but you're right it would be the deathknell of the WWE. It would take them years to recover from something like that, because even though we know it's all fake--thousands of kids and people on TV would have their dreams crushed in 2 minutes.

I wonder what the implications of the sid/arn scissors incident would have been if the media was the way it was in this day and age. After all, two wrestlers trying to murder each other wouldnt exactly be good for business if it leaked into the mainstream press (and if one of them had hit a fatal blow, you can kiss wcw goodbye much earlier).
