Cena is essentially just a living billboard for the WWE. A blank slate that they can use to shill any positive message they can use to try to get themselves back in favour with everyone they pissed off during the Benoit and drug scandals. Some of it I admire (the helping kids cope with being bullied), but a lot of is a bit unbearable. It now sounds like going by this interview that they'll use every colour of the armed forces to pander to them too. As a fan of Cena the wrestler and the person I just have to put up with it because it's not changing, but it can be pretty obnoxious. It is obnoxious, and I guess that's why I'm all worked up, but in the larger scheme its not that big of a deal. I just hate the pandering. But whatever.

I think we're missing the real news here. “The jean shorts, for the moment, have been retired,” Boooooo! I'll miss Cena's hell bent determination to bring Jorts back into style.

As a fan of Cena the wrestler and the person I just have to put up with it because it's not changing, but it can be pretty obnoxious. Couldn't have said it better. There's a reason why the "Be a STAR" logo is on the sleeve of his new shirt. They've been sponsoring the hell out of that thing for months, and now they have John Cena, who is the face and top merchandise seller in the company today, become their "unofficial" mascot, complete with a new t-shirt to sell. It's in red, white and blue, and also just so happened to wear cargo shorts to match. Come on. It's the most logical plan, and it's genius. Cena's interview is in complete kayfabe, and he's just saying what he's been told to say for the sake of the sponsorship, regardless of how asinine it truly sounds. Chill out, guys.

Oh my God, f*** off, you obnoxious douche bag. He's won HOW many world championships now and headlined how many Wrestlemanias?! He's been the face of the company for like 6 years and has to be insanely wealthy at this point. YOU ARE NOT BULLIED. how do people treat him. Bullying is about emotions and behavior. Oppurtunities and success have nothing to do with it.

As stated previously there's a big difference between a guy like Cena being bullied online by trolls on Twitter and kids being bullied in much more cruel and harmful ways. Heck, Cena should consider him lucky that the worst he has to deal with is a bunch of people booing their heads off for the guy and a bunch of folks with nothing better to do asking him silly questions like "LOL, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR LOVER, B2?" Sure, it may still be bullying, but you can't honestly compare Cena being trolled on the internet or not being cheered for at a show and some poor youngster getting mugged for his lunch money or beaten up just for kicks.

Here's the thing. That's actually not the kind of bullying they're talking about here. Not to the largest degree at least. THey're talking about the verbal, stalking, rip down the victims self-esteem and piss on it type that leads to things like kids killing themselves.

I don't think Cena meant to say that getting booed by a live audience or attacked by heel wrestlers is the same thing as the horrible things that some kids have to go through. It was just an attempt by his character to further sell the message and come off as a role model by showing how he could be seen as relevant in relation to an anti-bullying message. It may not be completely accurate, but I can understand what he was trying to say.
I still think the shirt and slogan are lame, because they're not subtle enough and way too goody-goody for my tastes (as I said in the other thread about the shirt, between this and "Never Give Up," I'm wondering when Cena will begin sporting shirts that say "Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day," "Say No To Drugs," and "Eat a Well-Balanced Diet with All the Major Food Groups.") And while I think the WWE's intentions are good, there are more ideal character types to use to promote their message rather than a guy who spends half the time grinning and joking like a clueless dweeb, and the other half of the time being arbitrarily aggressive and intense.
Back in his heyday, I think a guy like Bret Hart would've been the ideal type of wrestler to advance a "Rise Above Hate" style message; a respected, straight-laced competitor who sent the message to kids that the way to deal with bullying was to look straight ahead, work hard on the things you like to do, be humble, and face challenges head-on. I think Cena has the potential to send a similar kind of message, but the WWE needs to take care of the flaws in his character first.

Thats not physical.

Its Kayfabe, so something like Nexus would count. Rey would probably be the best guy to say that, though. I don't buy it. Even in kayfabe he was already the main guy by the time that happened. Cena never had to overcome anything. In kayfabe his rise to the top was actually pretty fast, and even then most of that consisted of his rapper character that was essentially a bully. Cena's character has also always been a dick for no reason to plenty of other people. He's full of s***. I really hope this is all strictly kayfabe because if Cena the person believes any of that he's a dumb asshole. Rise Above Hate probably would've worked better with the rapper gimmick. In a way, the rapper character was bullied to an extent. When you look at his first year as the big dog, he was essentially treated as the new kid on the block getting pushed around by main event heels who acted like he couldn't hang with them. It wasn't until WM 22 when he finally stood up to "The Great Berrier" that he truly was the guy on top.

I would totally rock that shirt if it didn't say "Hustle, Loyalty, Respect" on the back. I never understood how hustling was supposed to be respectful and dignified.

Cena in the past has retweeted what were essentially death wishes upon him from fans so that may be what he's referring to. You know, idiotic fans who hope that his opponent literally murders him during their match.

THey're talking about the verbal, stalking, rip down the victims self-esteem and piss on it type that leads to things like kids killing themselves. Like when Cena makes thinly veiled gay jokes at his opponents? Or are we supposed to just forget that he's been verbally bullying opponents for years. Let alone all the times he's physically bullied his way into a match/rematch. It's disgustingly hypocritical. This is why The Rock's fb response to Cena rang so true to me. It's just like he says. The reason why many older men out there do not like Cena is because we see through his BS. Now, whether or not this is all kayfabe or Cena himself actually believes he's been/being bullied (while being completely unaware to his own bullying), I think it's downright irresponsible for him to be spearheading this campaign when he's basically setting the example that gay bashing is A-OK in the Cena world of anti-bullying. Sorry, but I'm not just not buying it. I understand the intention of the message, and I get that he's the figurehead of the company, and he's the big fan fav with the younger kids... But I really think this shirt and the idea behind it is huge leap in logic from what Cena has actually done. Frankly, the idea of an anti-bullying campaign in any wrestling promotion is just plain silly and ludicrous to me as well. So many storylines revolving around one or several forms of bullying all the time.
