...Johnny Ace as the authority figure prior to his full fledged heel taking ways? Like, the out of touch suit with a clear bias, but not totally evil?
I guess it makes sense because "absolute power brings absolute corruption" or whatever the quote is, but still. I think I preferred him back then, even though his over top stuff like "Big Johnny" is great, and I enjoy him on TV...

That Johnny was entertaining and was somewhat of a original WWE character. It was the closest thing to seeing Bill Lumbergh as a WWE character. Now he's generic evil authority figure #342855. I do get a kick out of the Walmart Cart with People Power on it but he needs to be a bit different. I did have a suggestion that he their needs to be more fascist undertones in his character and the way he runs the show and gets way into the idea of People Power and being the savior. How he should have propaganda vignettes on what he's doing. Someone did have a awesome suggestion he has a balcony built near the titantron for him to address a speech. Have Big Show patrolling around making sure nobody is saying anything bad about him or making fun of his voice. Etc.

The Bill Lumbergh-esque corporate suck-up Johnny we had at first was amusing.
"Vince-Lite" Johnny needs to disappear.

The Bill Lumbergh character was about the only authority figure trope that hadn't been explored in wrestling that I can think of.
Now that it's been done, I would prefer it if he left and we never had another authority figure for at least seven years.

I think the general consensus that Lumbergitis was the way to go.
But WWE can't help themselves.

I didn't buy that character at all. To me he was just an evil heel putting up an act.

In all fairness though, he didn't just turn heel out of the blue. It was a natural progression of his character. He was pushed and pushed by Punk and to a lesser extent Cena. He tried being the good cop. Now he's the bad cop.
That and as mrjl alluded to, he came in as a heel, and put on an act of being neutral.

I like the idea of him going full Dear Leader dictator mode. In addition to a balcony near the titantron to spread his messages of People Power during the show, there should be banners with the logo on it next to the tron and above the ring and possibly more military style uniforms for him and the Ace Cabinet.
