Hickman on the avengers should be amazing. Actually, can anyone fill me in on AvX I haven't read the series or either avengers or x-men in a while.

Basically the Phoenix Force is heading to Earth, on the way it has stopped and destroyed a bunch of planets, including one planet where it seemed to kill Terrax, former herald of Galactus. The Avengers know all this because a new teenage Nova, Sam (Loeb's son for all intents and purposes) crashed to Earth and told them before falling in to a coma.
The X-Men already knew the Phoenix was returning, and indeed Cyclops has been banking on it because he believes that the 'mutant messiah,' a girl called Hope, is destined to harness it's power and use it to make all the mutants mutants again and undo Scarlet Witch's 'No More Mutants' deal.
Captain America shows up in Utopia, the former Asteroid M, now crashed on Earth off the coast of San Francisco and declared an independent Mutant state, and says he wants to take Hope in to custody, get her somewhere the Phoenix can't find her and stop the Phoenix, in case it destroys Earth.
Cyclops, being written to be a bit overly focussed on the idea that everyone wants to kill off all mutants and all mutants must fight for their survival, and it is his job to make everything better, declares war on the Avengers. Everyone fights.
Wolverine, who has left Utopia with a group of X-Men and some of the X-teens due to not believing in Cyclops' militant stance on Mutants needing to be soldiers is all up for killing Hope, in the same way he was prepared to kill Jean when the Dark Phoenix took control. Captain America isn't up for this, so dumps Wolverine in Antarctica.
Hope goes looking for Wolverine and wants him to promise to kill her if she cant control the Force and they head off to the Moon, where Jean went Dark all those years ago.
The X-Men and the Avengers also show up on the moon and there is more fighting, the Phoenix arrives and Iron Man does something with Science that appears to really hurt it, there is a big flash of light.
The light fades to reveal that Hope has failed to take possession of the Phoenix, instead Cyclops, White Queen, Namor, Colossus and Illyana Rasputin are now the possessed, and are the Phoenix Five.
In a side story playing out in Secret Avenger, the Kree have used the Phoenix Force to resurrect Captain Marvel, who has convinced Carol Danvers and Noh-Varr to join with him in stopping their team mates from stopping the Phoenix.
In a second side story playing in Avengers Academy, the X-Teens are being guarded by the Academy but, with the help of the amnesiac Sebastian Shaw, they plan to escape and go help Hope.

Beat me to it. That totally happened. Unless you mean a book starring both of them as themselves instead of them literally merging together into one superhero. The Animated version was pretty boss, too. Although, the DCAU Batman really didn't have the jaw for facial hair. It accentuates it to the point of looking like Mrs Beakley.

Remender/Hickman being in charge of Avengers should be promising. I can't imagine Bendis' X-men will be a GREAT book, but at least maybe the team will be important again instead of being off in their little bubble where nothing important ever happens and they spin in their wheels. I feel sorry that Fantastic Four got handed to that hack Matt Fraction after everything Hickman's done to make them relevant again.

Quick reviews of the week: Strange revelation in Batman. Amazing Spidey and Thor were both ok; the brief scene with Rhino in ASM made me sad he wasn't featured more. Slott really picked up how awesome Joe Kelly made Rhino a couple years back.
Then Fantastic Four. The main idea was good...but dear God, I get it. Wakanda and T'Challa are the greatest at everything ever. When cavemen invented the wheel, Wakandans were already driving the 2020 Ford Focus. Wakandans cured AIDS by just giving it a smug, knowing glance. In Avengers 2, T'Challa will kill Thanos with one punch after creating a better Iron Man suit, curing the Hulk and juggling Thor's hammer. BLEGH.

With Remender on Avengers that better not mean he is leaving Uncanny X-force.
But I see Bendis beside UnCanny-- throws all hope all out the window.

I rolled my eyes so much when BP gave him whole economics speech and talked about buying up debt that my eyes just about fell out. It seems not writing him as the biggest mary sue in existence is beyond even the most competent of writers.

You had a lot of fun writing that didn't you . Ok, so they're recycling the whole possessed heros thing from Fear Itself, and have a new Nova which just straight up pisses me off! And Marvels alive, again? Have they not realised that him dying is the only thing that has kept him relevant? Ah well, sounds interesting. For reasons I can't quite explain I've really liked Hope in all the stories I've seen her in so might have to catch up at some point.

The weakest, most annoying issue in YEARS. Batman and Batman and Robin were actually really good, and the revelation in the former was just as good to me as the mindgames played in the latter. Huge cringeworthy scene in Batgirl, though. Green Lantern wasn't half bad, confused me, I think I might ahve missed last month. Also, what's going on with canon. DiDio said that no crises happened, but the war of light did. How did it play out if there weren't any crisis related deaths? Invincible was a lame followup to last month (although Ottley loves to draw some lovely tig ol' bitties), and Incorruptable was cool, I love Max Damage and wish I could read more of him. Incredible Hulk's storyline is pretty good but again, a lame followup to last month (art was better, though. Last month's Steve Dillon issue made me want to rage.) Gonna read Spider-Men, Ultimate X-Men, Thor, and X-Force when I am on the train heading home.

Spider-Men was all set up, but regardless of any other criticisms you can fairly lay at him, Bendis just knows how to write Peter Parker.
I haven't been reading the new Ultimate Spiderman as I was kind of emotionally devestated when I found out they were killing off Ultimate Peter Parker (still haven't brought myself to read the last few issues yet) so this'll be my introduction to the new kid. Really hope he get some interaction between main universer Spidey and Ultimate Mary-Jane. Hell, that alone could tear me up a bit....

Because Johns got to keep all his continuity, it was just everyone else that had to give up theirs.

Colour me excited! Astonishing Avengers? Is that yet another new Avengers team/comic? pretty much. i can't fault Marvel for it, though, it's good marketing. ditto the (probably temporary) changing of Thunderbolts to Dark Avengers (though I'd be confused as hell about that one if I wasn't familiar with it and just picked it up off the shelf because of the movie). it's better than DC waiting until 2 years after Watchmen came out to start putting out prequel comics (say what you will about the idea being offensive, it's just stupid marketing really, according to my LCS guy).

How did it play out if there weren't any crisis related deaths? Because shut up that's why! I'll answer this one: the War of Lights wasn't a crisis story. basically Geoff Johns' GL, Aquaman's recent history and Batman's entire history are almost exactly the same (he still died, but it happened at the end of Batman RIP instead of Final Crisis). everything else didn't happen now, or if it did, it was a VERY broad-strokes version of the same events (e.g. the classic Wolfman/Perez Teen Titans, the ones who still exist anyway, had adventures together, but it was informal and they weren't called the Titans)
