4 new characters, alternative skins (8 Yoshi colors!), eight tracks, & other stuff... great idea for a DLC, so Nintendo is doing it right. If the battle maps were centralized, it'd be perfect.
Also gives me hope for non-clone characters in Smash Bros. for DLC.

The Mario Kart DLC will be $8 per pack or $12 for the lot.
Insanely good deal.

I'm strongly considering going ahead with it just to get those Yoshi and Shy Guy colors, those will be right away. Though I'm saving what I have on my account for Hyrule Warriors right now so unsure on it.

Their only mistake so far has been the pre-order costume DLC for Hyrule Warriors. Everything else has been extremely well priced for the content you get.

It's better than us having to wait until they go retail... though I'll still be doing that since I'm getting it digital. The only ones of the skins I really want that much are the Twilight Princess ones anyway, maybe OoT Ganondorf. And I'll at least get the Ganon ones.

Still, Nintendo is kicking everyone's ass with this MK8 DLC. Had this been anyone else who does DLC, the characters, tracks, and vehicles would each be their own separate DLC packs. And would probably cost like $15 per pack. None of this "buy all the packs and get a discount" stuff.
Basically Nintendo is doing DLC in a way that is good for the consumer. Everyone else does DLC in a way that only benefits the publisher/developer.

Everyone else does DLC in a way that only benefits the publisher/developer. For all the flack that Nintendo has gotten over the years by being late to the online gameplay party (GameCube only had third-party LAN support), and being hesitant towards the idea of DLCs (they didn't do them until the latest Fire Emblem & New Super Mario Bros. 2), Nintendo is showing everybody how DLC is supposed to be used; to extend the life of a video game as opposed to having to go out and make a brand-new game. It's both a cost-savings measure and also a means of giving the fans what they want. I mean, Nintendo could've mailed this and just presented alt skins, but to create new characters (including Link, of all people) and tracks... wow! Other DLC packs do it by building as many features as possible, but "locking" most of those features in the base game, requiring the user to wait for the packs to come out, and buy them seperately as opposed to bundling. This is one of the plethora of reasons why Capcom's in dire straits today, and it's gonna bite EA on the ass with the Sims 4. My one regret was that they didn't do this with Mario Kart 7.

It helps that the game itself was released complete, and all this feels like an expansion pack.

Is this thread doing the updating but not thing... as it keeps showing up as new in my feed.... edit: Nevermind appears to be working now. Why or how the "Guest" arrived, I shall never know. It helps that the game itself was released complete, and all this feels like an expansion pack. As opposed to just having on-disc DLC, requiring the player to "unlock" them by buying a "key" in addition to buying the base game. That's one gripe I have about the WWE 2K games with certain wrestlers like Mike Tyson, Ultimate Warrior, and Sting (to refer to the last three installments). And, it's one of the reasons why Capcom's in such poor shape anyway. This is arguably one of the better ways to use DLC by presenting a game as "complete" and then providing an expansion package to enhance the game and also extend its lifespan. Like I said earlier, this is perfect for Smash Bros. because it'll be another 6-8 years before Smash 5 is made, so might as well get the popular choices who didn't make the final cut in sometime down the road.

Also... WARNING! DIRECT APPROACHING!!!This direct is Japanese-exclusive (for now), so more likely, it'll focus on Japan-only games, but also probably provide first looks into new Nintendo projects. Seeing as how all the major games have been produced, this'll probably be a time period for other unorthodox projects or secondary works. I'm sure it's unlikely, but I hope Golden Sun 4 is announced soon since Camelot just finished up their sports games for the 3DS and Wii U. This might also dabble into Smash Bros. for the 3DS since that game comes out in two weeks in that country. And, if anyone's interested, it'll be 7:00 AM EST (8:00 PM Japan time).

Nintendo has announced new 3DS and 3DS XL models in their Direct.
Both models have bigger screens than before, newly colored face buttons, a second set of shoulder buttons next to the existing ones, and FINALLY a second analog stick. However don't go doing backflips yet, it is a tiny little nub right between the touch screen and the X button. And I mean it is a tiny little f***.

It's pretty damn bizarre that they announced a Smash Bros. character - a newcomer at that - during a Japan-only Nintendo Direct.

Kind of torn on the Xenoblade thing. On one hand, it does make the game more accessible and I've heard some good things (and some bad). On the other, given how whiny the fanbase for it was about it getting an American release I don't know that I want it to cost people less than $80 to get it used.
Eh, I'll go with the side of not being a douche I guess. Pretty unlikely I'll give it a look though, its fanbase has kind of made it impossible for me to ever be objective about it.

Also apparently a gyro sensor for the 3D, so even if you're not looking directly straight on at the screen it'll appear in 3D. I may have to upgrade if/when it comes out. It's out in mid October in Japan it seems, we'll see if the US gets it around then too. Also, apparently the regular version has customized cover plates you can switch out that not only change the outside look of the system, but the look of your menu screens. Couldn't tell if the XL model had it.

Also, that sexy Super Smash Bros. 3DS? Iwata called that one a "New" 3DS LL, meaning it will have the new design.

Oh and Xenoblade appears to be exclusive to the newly announced models due to their improved hardware and speed.
