One thing I liked about the book, even though I saw the movie first and knew how it ended. It was written so at least at first, everyone was in danger. Some characters you thought would make it to the end were just killed off in brutal fashion.
It prepped me for George RR Martin.

Recently got a Region 1 release. Beautiful. In light of all the Hunger Games hoopla, I told some friends about Battle Royale and now they all want to see it. Should it be out in most video stores or more likely at a major retailer? I saw a few copies sitting on the shelf at my local FYE. Don't know if that means anything to you. Haven't really been paying attention since I've got a region 0 DVD version years ago.

Off the top of my head besides basic premise: {Spoiler}Overly optimistic propaganda movie, love story, explosion based deadly zones to herd kids to fight, thrill killing main bad kid, knife wielding psycho bad girl, gang of bad kids teaming up (book), faking suicide to win, reluctant killer protagonist, protagonist surviving only due to former game winner's mentorship, main character protecting defenseless girl, torturing weaker people to try to trap hero, multiple winners, rebelling against oppressive society and becoming enemies of the state, unrequited crush from before games, and many more Sounds like the plot of Death Race. But that can't be! The Hunger Games has to so totally be a rip off of Battle Royale! See? You just proved how even the venerable Battle Royale isn't original. Seriously though, enough with the f***ing "Hunger Games ripped off Battle Royale" thing. It has gotten f***ing old, and this is coming from a huge fan of Battle Royale! There isn't a drop of originality left, people, can we please move on already?

And being inspired by something is fine, but steadfastly saying it was your own idea when it wasn't, that just bugs me.

Battle Royale, as much as it pains me to say, is EXTREMELY niche, like so niche it isn't even f***ing funny, so it is very possible for Collins to not have read, watched, or even heard of Battle Royale.

Possible, but extremely unlikely. But this is a Battle Royale appreciation thread, so back to business at hand! The removal of Born to Run in the movie, good or bad decision? Edit: Also Koda, I vaguely recall us agreeing on something once... but that has since been lost to time.

I disagree about that. {Spoiler} But yeah, back to Battle Royale. What I find interesting is, despite the stories being the exact same, the three different versions of Battle Royale, ie the movie, the novel, and the manga, all offer completely different experiences, imo. Did anyone else feel like that, if you've experience BR in more than one form?

I did a project on this book in my senior year of HS, where I wrote a rap about it and performed it with my friends. I wish someone recorded it I don't even remember the lyrics. But it was set to the beat of "The Whole World" by Outkast.

FINALLY got my hands on a DVD last week. I can't believe how stupid the production company was about releasing the movie in the states. talk about unrealistic demands.
movie was worth every penny. I will say, though, I thought that the Manga did a better job of making me care about everyone. I know they only had like 2 hours in the movie but the Manga fleshed out the characters a lot more. in the Manga when a character died it often hit like a bullet, but in the movie most of them felt like nameless red shirts. that said, I thought the villain in the movie was a lot more interesting and 3 dimensional than the goofy "complete monster" villain in the Manga.
never read the book, but I'd really like to.

I agree with you on this. The manga has better characterization thanks to it being pretty f***ing huge. However the movie version of Kitano is relatively sympathetic while Kazuo and Shinji are both ridiculously badass.

I saw this back in 2001 because Total Film did a article on it, I've loved it ever since (It's sequel is pretty "meh").
I saw Hunger Games last night and really enjoyed it but It should have gone the extra mile and been gorier because I think the lack of Blood/On screen deaths kinda nerfed it.
BTW I prefer this BR trailer

The scene in the lighthouse is one of the most intense ever. Fantastic stuff.
The visual of Kiriyama emerging from the flames is classic. Great villain.

I believe the manga did a better job of character development than the movie, it was an okay movie though, the sequel was terrible.

I haven't seen The Hunger Games yet, so I can't comment. I will say that Battle Royale, while entertaining, was a one-time watch for me. It kept my interest but, ultimately, I grew tired of it after a while. The sequel was very poor, also, though it was essentially a recreation of the first. I LOVE the sequel. Primarily because it gets more into the politics of it, which the film entirely excised in favour of the reality-tv aspect of it. It's a little heavy handed sometimes, but it's still quite nice to have. Surprised you think it's a recreation, given the different slant it takes. The linked collars and buddy system even made the early stages of the game far different, and it changes entirely by the time they meet Wild Seven. Heck, the thing I thought would be similar, the wild haired ginger kid, turned out to be very different from Kiriyama!

Loved it, though admittedly I don't think I have watched it since I purchased the DVD about 5 years ago. Ditto on the awesome visuals of Kiriyama towards the end.
