I haven't seen The Hunger Games yet, so I can't comment. I will say that Battle Royale, while entertaining, was a one-time watch for me. It kept my interest but, ultimately, I grew tired of it after a while. The sequel was very poor, also, though it was essentially a recreation of the first.

I highly suggest checking out the book if you haven't already. The author even talks about his love of wrestling in the introduction (which obviously inspired the title).

One of the first ones, I think, that I read that had a ton of violence like that. It was a pretty thick book, too.

Interestingly enough, I bought the DVD yesterday. Will come back here to give my approval or disapproval once I've watched it.

I loved the book, but when I saw the movie I was kinda disappointed. It was still cool, but I was much more entertained and enthralled by the novel, which I guess isn't really a strike against the movie.

The book was awesome, and it bugs me just how much Hunger Games blatantly stole from it.
But whatever, the book managed to make me care about an entire class worth of characters, which was impressive. The movie had flaws, but I also enjoyed it a lot.

First saw the film back in, like, 2003 after hearing good things about it on the internet. I dug it a great deal, though I haven't watched it in a while.

Wasn't it determined that the similarities really were a miraculous coincidence? Anyway, I thought Battle Royale wasn't available in most places. Is it easy to find nowadays?

Just curious, are there any specifics regarding what Hunger Games took from Battle Royale? Or is it just the main premise that you're talking about?

Pretty much the premise of teenagers fighting to death in an enclosed environment, as organized by the government. When you think about it, the overall concept isn't that original.

As far as I can tell, the only similarity is that children are made to fight each other. I haven't read Battle Royale, but I already know that the setting and reasons for the fights are different.

Off the top of my head besides basic premise: {Spoiler}Overly optimistic propaganda movie, love story, explosion based deadly zones to herd kids to fight, thrill killing main bad kid, knife wielding psycho bad girl, gang of bad kids teaming up (book), faking suicide to win, reluctant killer protagonist, protagonist surviving only due to former game winner's mentorship, main character protecting defenseless girl, torturing weaker people to try to trap hero, multiple winners, rebelling against oppressive society and becoming enemies of the state, unrequited crush from before games, and many more

I mean, I'm not familiar with Hunger Games at all besides the premises being similar, so this makes it seem more like a ripoff to me.

This was my first exposure to it too, so that's probably why I am taking it so badly. The movie itself was relatively well made, but it just seems like she did the high school thing where you copy and paste an essay online and change just enough words to fool google. And I can accept she got the set up premise from the myth of Theseus and the tribute to the King Minos, and the country is named Panem aka Bread from the old Roman Term "Bread and Circuses." But, it just screams theft otherwise. But enough about that, how bout that Battle Royale!?

Recently got a Region 1 release. Beautiful. In light of all the Hunger Games hoopla, I told some friends about Battle Royale and now they all want to see it. Should it be out in most video stores or more likely at a major retailer?
