[editors notes: if there is an all encompassing "Community" thread, please just squeeze this into it before I get judged with your cold, dark eyes. Thanks.]
After seeing people on this forum promote the show in their sigs and avatars and what-have-you, I finally decided to watch the first season of Community. And I gotta say...you people have great taste. The pilot episode is really slow and full of exposition, but pilot episodes are usually like that with a few exceptions. But the rest of the season is hilarious. Favourite episodes were "Introduction to Statistics" (Halloween episode), "Contemporary American Poultry", "Beginner Pottery" and "Modern Warfare". Favourite characters are Pierce and Senor Chang.
And this is my favourite scene;
Thanks F.A.N. for enlightening me. So, what's your favourite...stuff...from the show?

I also have the first season of Community on it's way here... although more on the recommendation of a close female friend than from anyone on here.

Good choice, my man. Getting the first season on DVD was the tipping point for me, too. Life is good, but Community makes it that much better.

I think you all know my opinion on the matter. Mine as well. I actually just started re-watching the series since it came back.

If "Modern Warfare" isn't inducted into the Smithsonian or some museum in the end of it all, I quit life.

If you ever take one piece of advice from me, if you ever heed one word from my voice, it is the following: watch the first two seasons and then immediately pump the brakes. Pretend the show only has two seasons, you'll be much happier.

officialfan.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=offtopic&action=display&thread=416031*judges OP with cold, dark eyes* Cool to see another new fan of the show, it appears as if the hiatus has really grabbed the attention of those who never heard of or never bothered watching Community. If you ever take one piece of advice from me, if you ever heed one word from my voice, it is the following: watch the first two seasons and then immediately pump the brakes. Pretend the show only has two seasons, you'll be much happier. There is nothing wrong with the 3rd season (which hasn't even finished, by the way). It's just that the first 2 seasons were so amazing from top to bottom, that a more "tamed" or "normal" 3rd season looks inferior by comparison. Out of 11 episodes so far, 7 of them are S1 & S2 quality, one of them being one of the best episodes in the entire series thus far (Remedial Chaos Theory). The up-coming episodes sound fantastic.

I'm going to say it, and I hope it doesn't get me shot, but I've watched about half a season of Community, and I just don't see why everyone loves it so much. I love Donald Glover and Joel McHale... and.. ahem...Alison Brie, so by all means, I should love it, but I just can't get into it.
Does it pick up in later seasons? Should I stick it out?

The first half of the first season is a bit rough and doesn't really pick up until the episode where Troy debates whether he wants to play football or not. From there onward it gets progressively better. If you're really on the fence already though, I would just go right to the second season. They're on their game the entire run, resulting in one of the finest seasons of American television of the past decade.

And you still haven't seen "Modern Warfare".
Stick it out. It does get better.

I watched the whole first season and felt the same way. Chevy and Glover were great but other than that all the characters annoyed me and I didn't think it was that funny. To each his own, though.

For many, the appeal was about this group interacting within the world of community college. This season, once they stopped regularly having each episode centered around the group at school, it became a different kind of show.

And if you ever take one piece of advice from me, ignore his advice. I totally get why people dislike the third season. For many, the appeal was about this group interacting within the world of community college. This season, once they stopped regularly having each episode centered around the group at school, it became a different kind of show. Yeah, they've definitely explored the lives of the characters away from school more in this season than previously, but I don't think the show is really all that different or inferior as a result. There were a number of brilliant episodes last year that either didn't take place in the school, or if they did, the setting was insignificant to the story (Mixology, Advanced D&D, Christmas, Intro Documentary Filmmaking, Critical Film Studies). If anything, going outside of the school gives them more possibilities and will help keep the show from becoming stale, while also furthering character development. But yeah, the point of my previous post wasn't "The show is still good, you're wrong, I'm right", but instead "It's terrible advice to stop watching a show you like just because someone on the internet tells you to." People who haven't seen Season 3 and enjoyed the first two should definitely keep watching and form an opinion for themselves instead of blindly following someone else's.

Community is a hard show to get into.
My gf's boss hated it at first. He said it lacked an emotional core and was just people making jokes all the time. But he recently REALLY warmed up to it after getting into the second half of the first season. He cited Investigative Journalism and Contemporary American Poultry as the reasons why.
