"Grylls, 37, who was dropped into hostile places to survive by eating insects, wading rapids and drinking his urine, has hosted the TV show since 2006, becoming a celebrity around the world."
They should've put quotation marks around hostile, because where he goes isn't all that hostile, really. Namely because where he films is always relatively near civilization.

I never understood the backlash he got. Was his show originally meant to be real and later found to be fake, or did people just not like how it was scripted?

They were selling him off as going into these dangerous expanses of wilderness, yet it was revealed that, for example when he did an episode on a volcano in I think Hawaii, someone posted a video on the web that revealed that where he was filming that episode was like a few hundred feet from a f***ing highway.

That said, you still probably learn more watching it than "I was going to show you a trick, but it didn't work, so enjoy watching me hang out in the dark" Survivorman. There are benefits to creating your own scenario compared to just kind of hoping it works out.
They should put Bear Grylls in a remake of Waterworld.
"Better piss my own drink."

You guys clearly don't know just how accurate Bear Grylls' video game adventure really was! He really gets attacked by bees, bears, and bitten in the manjunk repeatedly by snakes! C'mon! ;D

They started it out acting like it was real, then revealed that it was all staged. So that's really where the backlash came from. There's also the fact that if you took a lot of his survival tips, you'd probably die faster.

Yeah, and drinking your own urine, and climbing down a waterfall Les Stroud may not have the most exciting tv show, but if you follow him you're a lot less likely to die from doing stupid things.
